When I was younger I was one of those Mary-Sue makers, and I really appreciate the fact that someone gets that these are young writers who don't know better.
Yes that's true but unfortunately haters gonna hate, hate, and hate some more. I agree. Live and let live man, as long as they aren't hurting anything. What's the harm?
Oh yeah I totally get that, especially if people are rping and a mary sue is involved, but I mean when someone writes a fanfic and all that with a mary sue I guess people just shouldn't read it if they don't like it right? Let people express themselves xD

I've made a mary sueish character before. Yes, Mary Sue characters just get a lot of flames and hate and to be honest I've been kind of guilty for not really liking them much. But that isn't hear nor there. Point is, I guess people just get maybe jealous when they see their favorite main character with a good looking OC? That could be a reason, but there are lots of reasons why people hate on Mary Sue/STU type characters. Mostly it's because they are poorly written and they lack originality. Again I'm not really meaning offense here, but merely stating a reason why people flame on them.
I've only now heard of Mary Sues (The term), and I don't think I have actually interacted with one before, but I'll make sure to help them out whenever I can! (I refuse to be a Sheldon Cooper, It's simply horrifying to me.. I'll make a post in a little bit about it for anyone.. ==)
I'm starting to see this Mary Sue business from another angle myself. I guess if you live a very isolated life, it would be very therapeutic to write about a character based off of yourself in a favorite fantasy world. I think the problem is when you actually think you ARE that character.
I guess the Sue thing becomes problematic when you have one and you don't want one. Chances are, if someone is reading your story, they don't want to read about the perfect character (or the flawed character who gets away with everything anyway). They want to connect with your story and characters. You want them to, as well. It's sometimes just difficult to navigate what makes a good, relate-able character.
Call it karma. Call it luck. Me, I just don't give a... BOUNCE!
Yep I totally agree on the roleplay thing, then they need to tone it down haha constructive criticism is good :) I just feel bad when I see people being super mean to others for having a mary sue x( Unless of course the creator is being totally obnoxious
If they were trying to create something really good, I might point it out so that they can learn and better reach their full potential.
But the only reason I'd really get irritated is if they were using a Mary Sue for a roleplay I was in. In that case, it really does affect me (since it affects the roleplay), and if it keeps on going I'd probably quit the roleplay. I'm not saying that they should never make them for roleplay, I just have a particular roleplay taste that can be hard to please sometimes. *shrug*
But other than that, yeah, harassing those people is stupid.
Edit: Oh, you mention the roleplay thing in a comment XD Guess I should have read that first.

Yeah it gets out of control! I felt so bad for that person. I guess I just never understood why it was a big deal, of course, if someone Rp's with a "mary sue" I can imagine that it would be frustrating, but if they just have them there as a character in a fanfiction or whatever, it's just not a big deal. It won't ever really change the canon story lol
I think you make good points about all of this with Mary Sues. Honestly, people are so quick to jump on others when they make their own creations and insert them into a well known series and all. I've seen it a lot, especially lately. In fact, I read a whole article this morning about how a girl who did fan art for the show Steven Universe was shunned and persecuted so much that they almost drove her to suicide. I don't see where creating characters or doing your own interpretation of them hurts anything, and you shouldn't be so badly shunned because of it. Personally, as long as someone wasn't stealing my characters and calling them their own, I'd see it as flattering if someone used when and inserted their own with them. At least I'd know that they liked them that much But yeah, as a whole, I think it's really stupid to judge others for fictional characters, and you really don't know what that person may be going through at home or in their personal life. It very well could be their escape.

Yeah I've seen a few people who literally think they are the character and honestly I guess I can't judge because I don't know why they think that.
It's true, I think it might be sort of challenging to create a good, balanced character sometimes x(
