Truthfully...as a teacher you're not there to be their friend. You're there to teach them and keep them in line. To kids, a "nice" teacher is someone who lets them get away with being unproductive brats. I commend you on being a "mean" teacher. Be strict, but walk in the virtues of love. They may not love you for being tough, but they'll respect you for not giving up on them.

I know exactly how you feel. Ive gotten stuff from my students on Christmas and at the end of the year. Its awesome to feel appreciated like that.
Its a special feeling that can keep you riding high for quite some time.
