It's the parental way. And if you work it in reverse [telling your parents something--which they forget or weren't listening to-- and then returning with the "I told you that!" ], they get absolutely huffy.
Moral: There's no way to win against parents -_x;;

Yeah. Because of my twin sister and I my parents forget who they've told about certain things...like mom will be like, 'yeah we're going grocery shopping, I told you that' while, actually she was talking to my sister, and thought it was me...annoying, I must say.

Being vague is part of the parental code. >>; I sometimes have to deal with the same situation. I say "You never told me that," to which my Mom will say "You were in the room," which usually means I was passing through on my way to the kitchen and not paying attention.
