Yeah, the ending to FMA-1 was REALLY weird. Sure I cried a bit, but I still felt dissatisfied. Don't get me wrong, it started off really strong, and then... Psyren. Or however you spell her name.
Looking back on it all, they should have held off making an anime so soon. That way there wouldn't be two separate series and this big ol' rivalry. Besides, the pacing would be much better.
Call it karma. Call it luck. Me, I just don't give a... BOUNCE!
As someone who watched the original first, I've gotta say that FMAB is better because the ending isn't COMPLETE TRASH dragged out by a movie. The whole conflict with Dante is taken out because let's be honest, Envy being the Elric brothers' half-brother IS PLAIN RIDICULOUS and takes away from the plot. I really disliked the explanation behind Hohenheim's extended lifespan because it just wasn't appealing. The lack of the original (and when I say original, I mean the manga defines what's canon) antagonist was a disappointment, and frankly the modification of characters' roles (as well as the death of Izumi towards the end of FMA-1) really took away from the story.
I've seen both series for FMA and I don't think that one is better then the other. Sure FMAB was a lot closer to the manga then FMA-1, but they both still had amazing story lines and I love both the series. I love the cast of character from both series. Sometimes I feel like people just don't know how to do proper pod casts of write about things where it isn't just bashing one thing and praising another.
Sometime's it just makes you want to tell the person or people who are talking about it that they should be a bit more openminded about things.

I really respect people that don't have a preference for either series and like them both equally. That takes an open mind.

Prepare for slightly-ranty answer.
