Wow you do such a profound thinking while you're having your haircut. Me, I'm just freackin' out and hoping the hairdresser doesn't cut half of my hair and I don't end up bawled XD
Now obviously, the haircut was not the impetus for the personality shift...But to me, from a symbolism standpoint, it was an incredibly important experience.
Exactly! Nice to know that I'm not the only one that has had this feeling. :D
I had a haircut yesterday, too. Your post about the experience is a bit more philosophical than mine.
It is funny how your hairstyles can come to symbolise so much, especially if you've had it for a very long time. My hair grows quickly, and with a couple brief exceptions (the summer after second grade; my fifth grade year), I've always kept it past shoulder length. Especially during high school and early college, my hair was extremely long.
Towards the beginning of my junior year, I had it all cut off at my ears—and a few months later, trimmed even shorter. It was liberating—there was this incredible mental sense of starting afresh. I became more outgoing (it's a relative term), made a lot of new friends, and found myself feeling happier and more adventurous.
Now obviously, the haircut was not the impetus for the personality shift. (If I hadn't been feeling adventurous beforehand, I never would have gone through with cutting all my hair off!) But to me, from a symbolism standpoint, it was an incredibly important experience. It helped me embrace a much-needed emotional growth spurt.
My hair is long again now (like I said, it grows fast), but I still appreciate what that haircut meant to me—even if it really was me doing the changing, not my hair.
It's hard to change. It comes to a point where you simply have to hold your breath and take the plunge. In the end, if your will is strong, you will turn out alright. Something as simple as this can really make you think about it.
Having my hair cut a while back much shorter than usual was a hard decision, but it was a much less self-reflective experience.
And a common conversation I hear from my aunt and uncle applies here, I think...
Aunt: "I'm gonna go change clothes."
Uncle: "Ok, but don't change too much, we like you the way you are!"
