Hello there, this is Katana, also known as Kat in some circles. I'm your friendly neighborhood twenty-two-year-old illustrator/writer whose sarcasm is second to none and harboring the ability to verbalize the parentheses in stories. I drink coffee and draw like an addict and am liable to get you into things that I like. Currently the wielder of a BFA in Illustration and a minor in English.
Questions? Comments? Death threats? Feel free to PM or message me in some iteration. I'm always around, you just don't know it.
"Some of the great artists of our time started off by doodling in class. ...Maybe. Oh heck I dunno."

I guess I haven't mentioned this, but I'm being kidnapped away this weekend (less than an hour in fact...and by the time I finish writing this, I'll be getting angry text messages to hurry up and get down to the parking lot...) So yeah, being kidnapped away by my friend Terumi and Jiaqi is also coming along. There's this thing at Terumi's high school, a world's fair, and apparently it's a good time? It's also her baby so she really wants to see.
Oh, and we're going to go to the Japanese market and sing karaoke and just be really hyperactive the whole weekend. :B Internet will be scarce, So Yeah.
I needed to go to the post office, but it closes at noon. Wut. I needed to go to the bank, but it closes at 1pm. And these are two activities I really really really needed to do, and now they're being pushed back even further because I meant to do them like two weeks ago (ish, but then we had snowstorms and life sucked).
And because I'm not coming home next weekend, it'll all be really pushed back...Freakin' DAMMIT. DX
My primary concern is going to the bank. I lost my debit card and obviously need to get a new one, and I learned that my ATM card doesn't work anymore (well, hang on, I'll get back to you on that). So this past week, I was really in a tight spot and ended with six bucks to my name.
Well, it's been three days since the start, so let's do a rundown of how things are cracking.
- My first class on Monday was supposed to be ArtD 201, Intro to Vis Comm. This is the most important class for me this semester, as it includes my portfolio review and determines as to whether or not I can continue on in the major. It's a one-time only deal, very important - not to mention I was nervous with my whole "PC" thing.
It's at 1pm, which meant my wonky sleep schedule from Sunday didn't hinder me too much. I get there, only to meet a sign on the door saying the class was canceled. Panicking, I whipped out Piers, checked my e-mail, and found nothing (despite the sign telling me otherwise). The rest of the class shows up, complains, and leaves. I remain with my butt on the floor and hanging out in Chat.
- Speaking of Chat, I'm now in the mod-rotation. XD
- So I go back to my room and hang out until dinner, then I went to Art 103, 3D Foundation, which I have with Terumi and Jiaqi. We ended up dying slowly as the teacher, a grad student, kind of just..dragged...on...about...stuff. First project is to make something out wire. I'm making a switchblade (since Tati has one) that has cut off the ring finger of a hand (the latter being the idea of Johnny, this kid who I met at a transfer orientation, and who has clung on to us).
- Tuesday kicks off with ArtH 291 at 11am, which is the first art history class. I again have it with Terumi and met two new people. That was also kinda long, and at the end of it we had to look at a piece and determine if it was "art" or not. It quickly devolved into THAT argument, and one guy came really close to saying design is not art. *shakes fist* Barrowman!
- At 2pm I have Coms 100, which is just a basic speech class. This is my other grad-student-for-a-teacher thing, but I really like this one. She's really fun and is writing her master thesis on stand-up comedy. Oh, and she know who Joel Hodgson is, adding to the awesome. :B I do see it being a bit of a drag class, but eh, I'll live.
- And then at 6pm it's Art 101, Drawing 2, which I AGAIN have with Terumi. The instructor is a guy who knows me due to open houses and the like, but is just generally that "weird art guy" without being too out there. For instance, he has a restraining order on himself and had a robot marry him and his wife. ...Well, wait, I take back what I said...But yeah, it's fun, the class has that weird energy that comes out at night, and I can foresee it being a good time while also driving me crazy.
So today, I FINALLY got to be in Intro to Vis Comm. Everyone looks a lot older than me, except for the few people I know who are also freshman. In other words, Vis Comm was not their first choice for a major or their schedule was messed up.
The prof was ten minutes late and we were all restless as it was. But he came and then I became part of the group that was addressed as "you Windows people". There's three of us out of eighteen, and one of them, Hendrik, was in my 2D Design class last semester. He and I are going to be buddies, I can tell.
Right away the prof was like "I'll hold my tongue on that" and I said right back at him "And I'll hold mine in return". He probably didn't hear me (he also speaks very quietly and is really effing vague on assignments) but it was relatively peaceful. ...Excpet that he would keep saying "you Windows people" and then make it sound like the most awful thing in the world that we used the operating system we used. Jeeeezum.
My favorite, though, was him talking about fonts. "You Windows people know how to install fonts?", to which me and Hendrik are like "Drag and drop...". And then - this is my favorite - the prof goes on a, no joke, twenty minute lecture about fonts and installing them on Macs and where they're located and how to do it and why it's confusing and all this stuff.
Meanwhile, I had connected to the internet on Piers and was goofing around on DeviantArt.
I'm very computer savvy, so I know I'll be okay. Hendrik is as well, so I know he and I will be okay. This other girl? I honestly have no idea, and I'm a bit worried. I feel that we're going to have to keep up on the top in order to really make our professor know that we can be good too even though we don't use Apple computers. ...Then again, he did say "I haven't used Windows since Clinton was in office, and that might've been at the start of his term", so there probably isn't any hope. :P
I'm back on campus and about to go to class, but I can make a quick post.
Saturday I hopped the train to Chicago to meet Kimmeh and hang out with her, bellpickle, and Ryu. Kimmeh's aunt and uncle are awesome, very nice, very funny people (the kind of relatives I wish I had) and were awesome and picked me up at the train station. :B Then we went to the Museum of Science and Industry, wherein we met up with bell and fooled around for a few hours (Ryu joining us about halfway through). If you've got me on Facebook you can see photos and the like.
My favorite part, though, was eating dinner, because let's face it, food and friends are a great combination. We ate at Ed Debevicks, which, as Ryu put it, has a wait staff that fly the line between "customer service" and "lawsuit", which is actually better than it sounds.
I took a video while at the museum, and yes, the lighting is bad, so just shut your faces. It's not funny or intelligent, but it starts off with Kimmeh on a pole, so:
I wish I had more cohesive thoughts, but I'm fighting off this terror of going to my Intro to Vis Comm class and having to go, "My name is Ginger, and I'm a PC." Groan.
Today is the fourth birthday of the randomthunk.net domain name, which cracks me up when I think about it. On 1/8/06, a fourteen-year-old Katana purchased said domain name and has since done NOTHING with it.
Well, there's a site there, but it really does nothing. One of these days - probably this year - I'll develop the main site into a portfolio page. It is then that I realize that the name "randomthunk" is extremely silly. I mean, I realized this when I first named it; it's an odd and rather unprofessional name. But I really like it...I think it says something about me.
BUT DOES IT SAY THE RIGHT SOMETHING?!
So I have a kind of dread when I come to that point of presenting it to someone. I wish I had a tagline to go with it, but I'd want something that's not...prissy or "inspiring" or any of that garbage.
(I am in an awkward spot right now of having consumes way too much sugar and caffeine while at work. I'm a bit twitchy.)
Monday is when classes start up for me, and I'm really not concerned about it. My biggest hang-up right now is the fact that I have to pack all my stuff back up and move back in...urgh. That's the hassle.
And then there's the fact that we're already talking about dorms and stuff for next year. I'm pretty much set on moving over to Neptune North, namely because my friends are staying there and their hallways are awesome. It's the arts house (least the floor is, I dunno about the whole building) and it's just so much more...eh...something that I like. More energy for stuff. I will miss my room, which is a slight ounce bigger, but dude, their bathrooms are awesome..
But then I'm faced with the conundrum that I have no idea what to do for a roommate. My stuck-to-my-hip-'cause-we-have-three-classes-together-next-semester friend Terumi said she'd like to be mine but that she already promised another friend of ours, Deborah. I'm like "Okay, that's fine, don't break a promise and I like her so cool". My other option is Jiaqi...little, quiet, angry Jiaqi...But I don't think it'd work, since she goes to bed really effing early. >_>; Every one else is either staying where they are or moving to apartments so I don't have a whole lot of choice.
Gaaawd, do I really have to do random roulette and hope I get an awesome person? ._. I'd really like it if my roommate and I were like, into the same kind of stuff. Don't get me wrong, I really do like my roommate now, but there's that gap of not having a whole lot in common other than that our personalities are synced well.
