Also, a lot of things can be described as a language. My Physics teacher said that math formulas and stuff are a language; they speak to you. It was really interesting to have it put like that. Still didn't help me that much though. XP
I totally get what he means by describing written word as "little drawings", and it's a cool idea in a lot of ways, but I also kind of disagree with it. I mean, he's right in that language when written is a series of symbols that are designated certain meanings. Language, though, is a lot bigger than that, even written language. Imagery is definitely one of language's biggest tools, but sometimes it completely transcends imagery. At least in a lot of my own reading experiences, it seems as though language does more than create an image--sometimes it creates meaning without reference to any overarching image whatsoever. (Most notably when you start talking about any kind of theory.) It's the words and the sounds and the way they work together in and of themselves. It's all the nuance of grammar and linguistic play.
(Sorry, I've been thinking about written language for pretty much my entire college career.)
