The whole "meant to be together" thing really sticks in my craw as well. But I think if you look at it as, not a love story, but a tragedy, then you get the full picture. Remember it was mentioned that the two were "star-crossed lovers", but you could just as easily interpret that to mean they were meant to be together or that they were meant to be dead together.
Very morbid. And, really, I don't look at it as a love story at all. There's nothing really romantic about killing yourself for someone else, after all.
If I was going to bullshit some depth into it, I suppose I could say that the reason it ended up a tragedy is because the relationship was based on infatuation and there wasn't time enough to build up any sort of trust between them and yadda yadda yadda which is why the guy thought the girl was really dead and killed himself and blah blah blah.
As for the age angle, that's a different time period, both written in and written about, and it wasn't uncommon for girls of that age to be married off. Certainly ain't much in the way of intelligence about it, but that was remedied by divorce being illegal. =P
So at least it's understandable, even if we're all frilling sick of it. If I never heard the story again it would be too soon.
My main rant - and this is paraphrasing it from high school - is that it's so like...Twilight. For being touted as like, the epitome of love stories ('cause we grow up hearing about it and it's very popular in our culture), it's so flimsy. I remember being rather annoyed when I finally read it and realized that these two are just MEANT TO BE for no reason at all other than anything purely physical.
Also, Romeo's like 16 and Juliet's like 12 and it's all kinds of squick. Oh, and I seriously wanted to punch Romeo in the face the whole time.
Keep in mind these are my thoughts on the play, not the anime "Romeo X Juliet". :V
