I only have one real suggestion then: "The Hiding Place" by Corrie ten Boom. It's been several years since I read it, but it was a very gripping memoir about Corrie ten Boom's years in Nazi Germany (and in the camps). So yeah, that's what I'd go with if I were you.
I'm not too sure if they're memoirs but David Sedaris books are mostly essays written about his personal life. Oh and The Glass Castle is for-sure a memoir that I read recently but I think it is "popular" (I got it from my mom so I dunno) so... yeah. That.
