In a somewhat similar parallel, I started High School with about 900-1000 other freshmen in the grade, we graduated with around 530 still around. Some moved, some fell behind, some just went away.
Its not too far out of the realm of possibility to think that as you progress in your major, the number of classmates still pursuing their goals will diminish as people continue to find themselves.

That's kinda how it happened with Japanese 101 to 102. In 101? Full class, tons of people. By 102? Half that number, at least. Part of it was 'cause all the anime nerds who wanted to study the language suddenly went, "Uhhhhh this is too hard, no thnx." :P
