I think Reeves is okay, but there is so much better out there. I don't mean to offend if you use that brand and think it's fine. Obviously it works for you! My experience with it has just been so "meh" that I don't like to recommend it.
You're doing the right thing by coating the cloth. I'm not saying you can't. Again (I should put this in a disclaimer), this is my huuuge personal opinion, and I'm one of the weird ones for not liking canvas. I'm also trying to think in terms of what is the simplest to come by and adapt to, and paper/illustration board is that to me, as it is a familiar surface and requires no priming.
I have Reeve's acrylic, and though you think it ain't that good, it's the only one I got. D: I like the marker-like finish it has when it dries, though.
But... if you say there are other better stuff out there, I'll check them out. I remember seeing a different brand sold in larger, individual tubes, but I forgot the name. There were large tube Reeve's, too.
I liked painting on wood, too. I just painted it white first, and started working on it. When I paint on cloth, I always coat it with white latex paint. I never thought about the paint-absorption thing. I just thought that it helps make things "whiter."
A friend once told me that you can survive with two flat brushes. A large one, and a small one for details. I really like flat brushes. I don't have a large, round brush, though.
Selecting a small, pointed brush is tough! Aside from caring for those tiny brushes... :|
I need to find a replacement for my pointed brush. D:

This is so helpful, Kat! I've been painting and learning on my own slowly and so this will help me quite a lot next time I paint with acrylics!
