Don't get me wrong -- I can respect if you don't like the movie as much as others. As long as you have your reasons (and you do), then it's a perfectly valid opinion, although you can't expect to not have to defend it. It's just the Hype Backlash thing that rubs me the wrong way. Again, I can understand being disappointed if you don't like a hugely hyped movie, but I don't really understand why it has to be specifically brought up. Ultimately, reputation is near useless when you first watch a movie. It is either good or it isn't -- strip away all the hyperbole, and that is what you have left.
EDIT: Also, I am jealous that you are getting all of this controversy. Someday I will post about an obscure movie that someone else has seen. Someday.

Shin my man, it's really hard, if not impossible, to not take into account what others think of something, especially when I'm so late in coming into these popular movies. I gave Princess Bride a fair shake and just didn't find it to be that great of a movie. I understand the whole parody concept, which is what I liked, but Westley and Buttercup were just annoying more than funny.
I know I'm going to keep getting grief for that one. >>;

I agree with your assessment of 2001 -- it's not the type of movie you watch to be entertained, at least not in the traditional sense (although I do think the story and ideas are interesting enough to be entertaining).
The Princess Bride is supposed to be cliche -- it's a gentle parody of fantasy stories/movies. That is a big part of its charm. Also, you gotta give Vizzini his due. His battle of wits with Westley is awesome and funny.
EDIT: Also, word of advice: Try not to take hype into account when you watch movies. Enjoy it on its own merits. Don't think about whether you like it more or less than other people.
(Apologies if you already have that mindset. I just hate when people unfairly judge movies, or anything, based on fandom.)

D: How can you not like Princess Bride? I know like every line in that movie. Psssh, how can you not like Wesley? If you can't enjoy campyness then I'm gonna tell you right now not to watch 'Labyrinth', you won't like it one bit.

Hey man, they have it where you can watch it without the RiffTrax too. But they released a DVD of it, so I figured, why not? Might as well watch "the best" and "the worst" of sci-fi, eh?
Now I'm in the >.5% that hasn't seen either Princess Bride or WALL-E. D: Why, Nehs, why?
Did you know that NOTHING in 2001 was done with a computer or any fancy special effects? Everything happened on screen exactly how it looks. Wild, eh? I mean, yeah, they did have to pull some stunts, but nothing was modified. That part blew my mind.
Only true B-movie fans watch Plan 9 without a Rifftrax. *totally did so*

Pixar has yet to make a movie that truly sucks (Cars being their weakest so far).

2001 is definitely an oddity. It's so respected because of it's cinematography, and probably because scifi up to that point had been B-movie fare.
I'd like to see the movies I suggested on that queue some day... *shot*

I didn't hate it, okay? I just didn't think it was as good as people have been making it out to be, that's all. I'd watch it again, no problem.
