I did just that, running off the bus to get in the house in just enough time to watch Kenshin, but sad, when it was canceled.
In Boarders by me, their are two ten foot bookshelves front and back, filled with it but its out of the main stream of people, its in the music section.

Being of the "younger generation" I can barely remember the VHS days, unless I'm asking for a headache from straining.
But man, oh man, do I remember Pokemon. It swept the nation and the cards were freaking EVERYWHERE. All the popular kids were out on the playground trading, as well as the "geeks". Everyone was trading.
Nice article. :D
And so many more people are grasping anime and manga, you're very right. In fact, there was a guy in front of one of my friends at a forensics meet who was reading Fruits Basket. A guy.
Shows you how well the spreading of fandom has gone.

Deep. Nana's always thought about this. She's been around since the VHS era and even then was looking for the next volume. And, sadly, Nana was also a AS watcher for a short period.
It is true about "Otaku". There really is to catch all definition that isn't so vague.
Nice article!
I remember when my cousin and brother sat me down and forced me to watch Tenchi Muyo on old VHS tapes recorded off of CN. ... and then I never had pocket money to spare agian -_-
Oh, and that day I first saw TokyoPop, I shall never forget the feeling of "Wow." Though it took me a bit to learn to read the "right" way.
Planet Ladder, volume two. That was the first manga that I ever got, because the store didn't have volume one. In all honesty, it didn't have more than maybe five manga, total (and I don't mean different series, I mean total.) Now that same store has seven shelves worth (not including the one that's hidden in the erotica section) with art books and how to draw guides, too!
I take pride in being an otaku who can remember our obscurity ^_~
2000 seems to have been a good year for the anime universe. That was the year I turned on the TV one Saturday morning (I was feeling nostalgic for my youth having gotten out of school that same year, and in a bit of an emotional rut as well), and I happened to see this show that was being aired with the freakiest name I'd ever seen. For some reason, I had to see that show through, I watched it every week till it was dropped, then I was pretty much out of luck till about 2003 when my cable company wised up and put Cartoon Network on a channel without RF interference. I learned a whole lot that year, like what anime was, that what I'd seen those year prior fit that genre, and there was a whole lot more of it out there.
For the record, Escaflowne was the hook which caught me, I've been an anime fan ever since. I never did see the early years of Toonami, I'd have liked to see that.
You know, I've actually thrown the word "otaku" at people outside the anime genre. I've used the word to really emphasize their passion for what they do. I call myself an otaku in many fields of interest where I have a passion for what I do. the term is the only one I can grasp that fits.

Of course, the term Otaku can also just be taken as a synonym for "geek". TheOtaku.com has now expanded beyond anime, opening up areas for TV, movie, music, and game fandom.
I'm rather glad I'm one of the older fans. My original exposure to anime was Voltron, although I had no idea of its origin at the time. But yes, I was a Toonami junkie from high school through my first few years of college until I gave up watching Gundam Seed. Thankfully Adult Swim came along and introduced me to Cowboy Bebop and Trigun, which were the first series I ever purchased.
And since then other channels have gotten into the anime game, one of which I'm most thankful for and that's IFC, beacuse all of their programming is uncut. And they've got three great shows in Witchblade, Speed Grapher, and Hell Girl that they'll be playing over the course of this year.
This makes me think of Wednesday while I was sitting around, waiting for my English class to be called off. The girl who sat across the room from me noticed my Fullmetal Alchemist bag for the first time and commented on how she liked the show. I was shocked, since she's never seemed like the "otaku-type", but apparently watches Adult Swim on occasion and has viewed all of Death Note subtitled. Here I am, toting in a Tony Tony Chopper plushie by excuse of the snow and she's an anime fan too. I guess it's all just a matter of talking to people in order to find out...
...just don't talk to forty-somethings. They might start singing "Kimba the White Lion" like my parents do. *eyes roll*
Nice Katana. Nice. Once again you've said many things that most people can relate to. Good writing style; some interesting little tidbits mixed in with humour. Kudos.
Although I DON'T know any of those book stores you mentioned. And never used adult swim, don't get the channel. lol.

Great article! I personally wonder why America doesn't have anime channels like the UK and Japan. Aren't there enough anime fans in America?
