Eureka 7: One of the best mecha anime ever. No wait, scratch that; one of the best anime period. It has a lot of drama (and comedy), but it's a good length and the drama never feels like too much.
Code Geass: Damn addicting. It's another show with mecha, although the mecha isn't really the feature here. It's all about the Geass.
You may find multiple characters annoying, and yet... there's no looking away. Plus, ACTION HORSE.
And I'll throw in one more recommendation...
Planetes: A sort of slice-of-life anime about space exploration in 2075. Probably the most practical take any anime has taken on this. It specifically follows a team of space debris handlers. It has also has a cute romance. :D

Toradora!: Absolutely the best romantic comedy going right now (since I wouldn't classify Clannad as a romantic comedy anymore). CoalGuys just finished the final episode, so you'll be able to find the whole thing online. Fantastic writing, wonderful characters and intelligent, emotional romance. Could not recommend this more.
Eureka Seven: Best mecha series I have ever seen. Everyone ever needs to watch it. (I'm planning to re-watch it dubbed some time soon.)
Monster: Maybe the most epic thriller you'll ever see. My favorite hero in anime (Dr. Tenma) vs. my favorite villain in anime (Johan Liebert). Very, very dark, with an excellent, twisting story.
Gankutsuou: An excellent tale of vengeance. Jouji Nakata is absolutely mesmerizing as the Count of Monte Cristo. I'd actually say that is my favorite vocal performance ever.

Maria-sama ga Miteru (et. al.) - school/slice of life about the relationships between a group of girls in a catholic school. Currently in it's 4th season.
Revolutionary Girl Utena - Interesting twist on the magical girl genre and a bit of a head-trip.
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 - THE best Gundam series, despite what anyone else says. Season 2 is so epic it will make you head explode.
Agatha Chtristie's Great Detectives Poirot and Marple - Adaptation of several Agatha Christi short stories and novels with an original character introduced to tie the two detectives together.
Princess Nine - Series about a girls high school baseball team and their struggle to prove they can compete in the national championship with the boys.
That's about it for now. ^^

And I echo Shin's recommendation of Monster and Gankutsuou, for the same reasons. I think you'd enjoy both.
