"You're staying with me at my apartment."
I blinked and twitched inwardly. Her apartment was beyond destroyed. There were cans all over the floor and papers strewn all about.
"This place is a mess." I hardly realized what I said until she replied.
"Its not that dirty."
I stared in disbeleif at the disaster before me when a huge black mass came bounding toward me.
"Ahh!!" I shreiked as it pounced and landed square on my chest, but rather than eating me as I expected, it just stared me down.
"Dont be afraid, its just my dog"
"DOG!?! THIS IS NO DOG!"
She called him, "Oka, off." and the 'dog' gently stood up and stood beside her.
Once inside her phone rang, playing some song I'd never heard before. After a few short, hurried sentences, she announced that she was off and grabbed enough weaponry to support a small army.
"I'm going out for a bit. Help yourself to anything," she said pointing to a pile of papers. "Im trusting you on this, that pile is every bit of data from the previous kira investigation. I suddest you study."
Then she turned to Oka and said "Keep an eye on her and make sure she doesn't leave"
After she was gone I got straight to work. It had taken almost all of my will power not to start the second I'd entered but goddamnit I'm way too timid. My fingers itsched to get rid of the catastrophe befroe me and restore order. I grabbed a recycling bin from the kitchen (well, it resembled a kitchen) and began to toss the cans into it. There was no way in hell I'd be able to concentrate on those files unitl this mess was taken care of.
About 45 minutes later, I sighed and sat down on a couch in the now relatively clean apartment. Now to those files. I stared at the coffee table where I had piled most of them until I could get to sorting them out aswell. I grabbed a poorly organized stack of records. Every single killing by the originial KIRA was there in a chronological order, or were until they came into her hands. I started by putting them back in order. Next I picked up a list of potential KIRA suspects. It was long and incredibly tedious to put it all back in alphebtical order.
After sorting through thousands of papers, I had learned little that I already knew. One thing, a very major thing mind you, caught my attention. A list of suspects quite unlike the one I first sorted through. It was covered in different coloured inks where someone had circed or crossed out several names several times. Eventually, there was only one name circled several times in a variety of coloured. The name was Light Yagami.
I dug throught teh other piled I had constructed in my organizing and found his file. He was so young when he became KIRA. A high school student. And he was intelligent, very intelligent. Top of all his classes in highschool and university. And he worked with L.
I stared at the file, shocked. L? No way. Was that how they caught him? Lured him in so that he couldn't resist the irony, then monitor him until he slipped up? If Gine has these files then she must have worked with him at some point, too. That or she stole the file, and God knows it would be one hell of code to break. I doubt that she'd steal the files from L undetected, in fact I'm almost positive. Perhaps she attempted it, but was caught and recruited by L, just like I was caught and recruited by her?
I gently rubbed the corners of my eyes where they were beginnning to itch for sleep. I sighed and leaned back on the couch. Checking my watch I realized that it was now almost 11:30 pm, and I hadn't eaten since we were at that cafe practically 12 hours ago. I got up and searched the freshly cleaned kitchen, where it still smelled of dish soap. Oka lifted his head as I passed him and watched me. What a creepy dog.
In the fridge I found nothing but energy drinks and coffee cream. Figures. Shutting the fridge I checked the cupboards and founda box of cheese crackers. Probably not the best meal on the planet, but it would have to do. I sat down at the table and arranged 12 of the crackers in 3 by 4 rows in front of me. I admired the simplcity and symmetry of the formation before popping two of the crackers in my mouth.
Then I heard The front door open, a slight pause, then close. Gine's calm, solomn voice came from the living room. "What did you do to my apartment?"
/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/
Yeah, its kinda long for what I usually do, I think, but I haven't posted in a while so its about time I got caught up. I've been lazy with my posting lately. Also, I know some people call him Raito, but I've always known him as Light, so thats what I used.
I sighed heavily as I stared at my laptop. It was deteriorating before my eyes. The voice message sent by the creator of the file I stole rang in my ears. You have Two hours untill the virus is unstoppable. I alone have the vaccene program that will leave your computer no worse for wear, fail and I'm afraid the concequences will be...dire.
I chewed on my thumbnail, thinking.
Two hours. I 've got two hours to get to this coffee shop, or I'm totally screwed. Fine. I'll be there.
Half an hour later, I pulled on a purple corduroy jacket and black leather flats. I grabbed my laptop and keys and headed out the door.
I was a short drive to Morning Sweets, the decided coffee shop. I thought of this person I was to meet.
They traced me and know where I am, but to want to meet within two hours they must be near here, espeially knowing the coffee shop they must know the area.
I pulled up in front of the coffee shop and walked in, a bell ringing as I swung open the wide door. I sat at a small round table and ordered some green tea from the waitress. Turning on my laptop took longer than usual, probably because of the virus. I sipped my tea and clicked onto the internet. I made my way to Google and searched 'KIRA'.
I idly read through pages of information I already had, and information I knew was simply rediculous. I payed little attention as my computer continued to slow. I thought once more of this mysery person.
Obviously they are quite inteligent, but could they be so intelligent that they are trusted with all the KIRA files? Or is it that the files are split up amongst others, so that no one knows everything, and I have only portion of it? And what about the other hacker? Is that person here too?
I glanced around the shop, searching for them. No one looked suspicious. The only other people in the shop were a young couple and an elderly man with a small dog. Not likely to be the people I was looking for.
I continued to browse and sip tea. The bell above the door rang and I looked up. Definatly the person I'm looking for. For one thing, they had a laptop under their arm, and for another, they cam and sat across from me. Nothing was said for a short while, then "Greetings, Elizabeth. I assume you understand the circumstances?"
Pfft, are you for serious?
I sat at my desk, staring at my laptop. I should have seen that coming. Doesn't matter, I decided. It's just a computer and I printed all the files anyway. I laughed softly to my self, then out loud said, "Nothing beats paper and ink."
I sat drumming my fingers against my desk, then got up and went to the kitchen. As I rummaged for cereal and milk, I considered the file I had stolen the night before, noting that there was no hesitation whatsoever in this person's retaliation. I wonder if this person caught the hacker before me? The hacker's precence must have been recognized, even I saw it.
Munching on my cereal, I returned to my desk and continued to stare at the screen, pondering.
This means one of two things. One; I'm in deep shit with the government or some secret organization, or Two; This person only noted my precence to get my attention and wants me to respond.
I set my spoon down and drank the rest of the milk in my bowl. I decided the latter was more interesting and probably alot more fun, so I clipped away at the key board and mouse for a few minutes. Son of a . . . Holy freakin viruses much?
I debated on getting a new computer, but by then this person would have increased security, if they hadn't already, and I may not be able to get through. Besides, nothing was bugged other than the file. I barely had a path to follow.
As I worked, I thought, At least this time I don't have to hide my self. This person knows I'm coming. I saved alot of time with that. By the end of about an hour, I had sent a little bug of my own to this person. Nothing too much, just a couple of pop-ups or something, a poke to get this person's attention.
Sending the virus back, I grinned. This is so on.
God damnit, I sit at my desk in the living room of my apartment, hacking KIRA files. Someone has beat me too it. Must be something else to have gotten through all this.
My eyes dart around the screen as file after file offers its advice, but behind it all is what I really want.
ACCESS DENIED
The message flashed again. Leaning back in my chair I think What is this? Is it serously that important? Now if the wall covers this and . . . but then theres got to be . . .
I clip away at my keyboard until I spot the pattern, the flaw if you will, in the system. After that, its just a matter of breaking a wall and moving a file and. . .
KIRA
I feel a thrill run through me. Yes! I did it!
I don't have time to dwell on my accomplishment though, its only an accomplishment if I find something of use to me.
As I read all I can take in, I notice there are peices missing, like in a puzzle. I love puzzles, I grin to myself.
Dates are out of order or not even there, information makes sense to a certain degree, but some information was empty without the information I know has to be here somewhere.
Leaning back in my chair, I pull my hair back from my face and hold it as though I'm going to put it into a ponytail. After a few seconds, I let it drop. I hate ponytails.
After poking holes through a few more obstacles, I am able to copy and paste all the information onto Word. After some consideration, I print the file.
Probably stupid of me. If the wrong person finds this, I could be in some deep shit.
A shiver runs down my arms as I realize its already 11pm. And I'm tired.
I have to be up early and start on that new case.
A woman was accused of murdering her husand after he cheated on her, then, in a mad rage, his brother. She was arrested before she could commit suicide.
Should be an easy case, I think. The evidence is overwhelming, but I hear she plans to plead innocence. Perhaps there will be some sort of challenge? I hope so. I'm bored.
As the printer whirrs and spits out sheet after sheet of confidential information, I pull on track pants and my favourite t-shirt. I look down at my Dirt Shirt and smile. Alot of people wouldn't know what it was, seeing as I'm living in Japan now. It was from PEI, washed with the famous red mud that could be found only on that small island. It was just boat ride across the bay, easily covered by my fathers trawler.
I was shaken out of my memories as the printer beeped, hungery for more paper. I placed a few more blank sheets in the tray and counted the ones already finished. There were sixteen, and the comtuer told me it was only 17% done. I sighed and loaded the whole package of paper into the printer and went to bed.
I'll go through it tomorrow. I yawn and set my alarm. Time to forget everything, at least for a few hours.
/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/
Just a note; I don't actually know how far a trawler can go nonstop, or if it can cover the distance from southwestern Newfoundland to PEI. I don't know much actually, but I think my character needs to show a bit more of her small-town-girl-fighting-a-big-world-but-winning-somehow personality.
^^ I like my character, even though she's kind of boring compared to all the child geniuses she'll soon be working with.
