A game of truth and dare had just come to a close; Toshirou and Berri had already gone, and Ulquiorra was in the proccess of leaving.

Kon said, “’night!”

Ichigo muttered “Whatever” and waved Ulquiorra off.

In a sing song voice Kon called to Ulquiorra, “'hope your alone time with Kita was pleasant!” He was given one of the espada’s barely-perceptible glares before he vanished.

Scowling, Ichigo muttered to himself, “I don't.”

“Jealousssssssss,” Kon sang, gaining far too much enjoyment from Ichigo’s suffering. Ichigo was too depressed to get more than a little annoyed.

Kita walked back in then.

“Miss me?” she asked. Ichigo “humph”-ed.

Kita looked miffed. “Fine, I didn’t miss you either.”

Ichigo grumbled.

“I missed you!” Kon said.

Ichigo grumbled again.

“I missed you too, Kon.” Then she shot a look at Ichigo. “Ichi, what is your problem.”

“I don't have a problem. Can't I just be quiet and sit here on the couch?!

She didn’t look or sound convinced but said, “Okay, if you say so.” She stared at him. “You’re pouting, Ichigo,” she stated bluntly.

“I.do.not.pout.”

“Ha, whatever.” She sat down next to him on the couch and shoulder-bumped him with a smile. Ichigo closed his eyes. She shoulder-bumped him again. “Where is my Ichi smile? I know it is there somewhere.”

“No, it's not. Ulquiorra probably ate it.”

“Ichigo…”

“So, you have a nice chat? Hm?”

“Yes, we did.” She narrowed her eyes slightly at him.

“Psh.”

“Ichigo, knock this off,” she ordered. “What is your problem.” When he didn’t answer, she stood up and began to walk away. “Fine.”

“I don't have a problem! Jeez, can we change the subject now!”

Kon stretched and yawn. “Well, lovebirds, I’m hitting the hay. Goodnight.”

“Night, Kon.” They hugged. Same exchange between Ichigo and Kon, except without the hugs.

Kon left the room, but stayed listening in by the door with a pencil and notepad at the ready.

Ichigo sighed heavily and shook his head.

“So, are you going to talk to me?” said Kita. “Or should I leave?”

“Damn…I’m not mad at you…come sit down…all right?”

She looked back at him and, after a pause, came back sat down.

“Kita…I…”

“I what?”

“I don't know why...it's just...”

Kon was getting impatient, but at the same time captivated as he strained his ears to make sure he didn't miss anything – it was like an soap opera he couldn’t stop watching.

“When I see you and him together--it just makes me really angry.”

“Ichigo,” Kita said quietly.

“It's not like I have a right to feel that way...I know.”

Kita lowered her head. “I’m sorry, Ichi’…I don’t mean to hurt you…”

“Don't apologize! I didn't want you to feel bad...argh! This is why I didn’t say anything.” His eyes hardened. “It’s better if you just hate me.”

Kita shook her head. “I could never do that.”

Ichigo looked at her with shock. “But...you're with them...You have to hate me--I'm the enemy now.”

“But you mean a lot to me too.”

“Hasn't Ulquiorra told you to hate me though?”

“I could never hate you.”

“You'll be going against him…” He was secretly happy.

“I can’t go against what I feel.” You go, girl! Follow your heart, Kita! Kon thought with tears streaming down his eyes. “And what I feel for you is special.”

“S-Special...” He looked away with a slight blush.

Kita chuckled. “Yes, special.”

“Don’t laugh at me....” he grumbled.

“Why not?”

“I have pride too.”

“You’re silly.”

“Contrary to what he said, I just did all those things to uphold my pride...he didn't have to take it so seriously.” He smirked. “I’d never played that before...”

Kita shook her head.

“Trying to get him to bow before Toushiro like that was a bad move. Things could have gotten really bad.”

“Ranks and enemies aside, I thought he deserved it for making Berri do that. I didn't pull anything like that, I mean, I could've dared Ulquiorra to run himself through or something.”

“True.”

“I can see how this game can get mean fast.”

“Yes.”

Ichigo yawned.

“Tired?”

“Yeah, it’s been a hard day for me…again.”

“Let’s call it a night then. What do you say to ice cream before we part ways?”

Ichigo perked up a bit. “Ice cream? Chocolate?”

She smiled. “Sure."

“Alright.” He stood up. “I can wake up for ice cream. Oh yeah...you liking my jacket?” He grinned.

“Yes, I am and it is very warm - thank you for that earlier.”

“No problem.”

Then she hugged him. “Thanks for being there.”

Ichigo blushed and looked awkward. “Well…I…uh…I’m not anywhere else…” Smooth, Ichigo, thought Kon sarcastically.

Kita pulled back and Ichigo coughed awkwardly. “How ‘bout that ice cream!?”

Kita tilted her head slightly, smiling. “You’re a great friend.”

“So are you, Kita...”

“Thanks.” Then she abruptly turned and, just before jetting out the door, said, “Last one there buys.

“No way!” He took off – but secretly decided to let her win.

Mod Konpaku stared quietly at the empty room, pad full of notes – some true and some made up – held limply in his hand. Then, in his mind, he gushed, OH MY GOSH THAT WAS THE SWEETEST THING I'VE EVER EAVESDROPPED ON!
