heartless shadows

The small light given off by a candle near by vanished, leaving behind a bitter trail of smoke. Darkness devoured the evanescence afterglow, and as if in a dream, from somewhere not too distant, a soft melodic tune traveled gently through the air. An inconsolable grief consumed her soul and there was no escape from the heartless shadows that haunted the Opera by night: the songs, the voice, and the angel that would never let her go. The melody clung to her in despair, and inflected her sleepless nights. It would follow her to the very end of the world.
