Haha! That's funny. That would be quit the err, odd place to get stuck lol.
Most of those pics you see with weird translations are always going to be fan subs hehe. They try. Some animes just don't have the professional subs. I used to watch the fansub of Naruto back in the day before Viz bought it.

I had originally avoided Naruto because of that. I'm sorry but please don't try to insult my intelligence by adding some fake ass sound effects and corny jokes and try to pass it off as the real thing. You know that's what ruined Cartoon Networks Toonami block. Yea I got intro to Gundam Wing on there and fell in love with it dub'd. But when I saw it in Japanese, no comparison there. I've tried a few times to watch Bleach dub'd, but can't. Outlaw Star wasn't half bad, but then again, had to be edited. Tenchi Muyo, decent...but edited. So for people to actually fully enjoy these wonderful shows you have to get the originals. I have Netfilx and I avoid the anime on there like the black plague because of that. They don't give you the option to watch the shows on there watch instant in Japanese. I'd rather watch it online somewhere then to have to go through that torture
I admit, I am not a Dragon Ball fan, and have not seen much of any of it, Engrish or sub. But I know how the dub has destroyed others like YGO.
But yeah that's what pissed me off about most dubs. Granted, there are a couple I don't mind. They did manage to find a lot of REAL voice actors to do it in English. But it seems most animes don't bother with it. Saiyuki (the first season), Cowboy Bebop, and Black Butler really aren't bad in dub. So there are some, but they are far and few between. Blood+, Fullmetal Alchemist, Naruto, and Bleach are just horrible dubbed, at least in my opinion.

Your right. Look I have nothing wrong/against the American va. But like you said, over there it's an art form and something they take pride in doing. The emotion they can actually convey onscreen...sometimes you forget your watching, to use an ugly term, cartoon. You mention YGO, think about Dragonball. If you've seen the og Dragonball, you know it was chalk full of jokes and situations that you just couldn't believe they were able to do and get away with. Once it was imported, forget about it. The jokes went away, cuz you know we wouldn't get the jokes or whatever and of course it was edited so much/bad, it wasn't even worth watching anymore in English.
No kidding. Japanese va's are professional actors, for a lot of the dubs, most of those people can't act for shit. And I'm sorry, but to do a voice for a character, you still need to be able to express emotion and stuff. You need to be an actor still, not just read lines.
Oh don't even get me started of 4kids lol. Never mind the dub part of it. Lengthening skirts and sexy outfits in YGO, editing out guns, editing out dead bodies, taking out the profanity and blood... uh yeah, they fucked that anime over something awful. All so they could show it to kiddies, bah.
There are some good English va's though, I will admit. Like Crispin Freeman (Alucard) and Steve Blum (Spike Spiegal, and is in all the Dragon Age games). But they are awesome because they ARE real voice actors and they commit to be good at it.
it's like they just get people that can't act for shit to come in and do the work and it comes off so fucking bad. Yu-gi-oh....what a bad show. They changed so many things as to not offend Americans. Dark Magician/Dark Magician Girl is originally Black Magician/Black Magician Girl. They felt that having the term 'Black' would have Americans thinking of it in such a negative way so they dumbed it down for us. Gee thank you. What would we do without you guys looking out for us? Not like in Japan, the entire population are running around, killing, maiming and raping people because of what they see in an anime show or read in a manga or the video games they play. Nope, only happens here. Kid shoots up a school? Well he was playing Grand Theft Auto the other night so games are evil.
It's true, I'd rather watch a kinda bad fansub than most animes in Engrish. Oh my do they slaughter some translations, or translate titles that don't need translating so they sound stupid in dub, or the voice actors really just blow. I don't watch anime in dub usually unless it can't be helped any other way.
as long as the people doing them are doing a half decent job. Hey, sometimes it comes out way better fan sub'd rather than dub'd. I hate the work they do with the dub'd. The voice acting sometimes is so horrible that 5min and I'm out. I swear, I had clicked on a link to Ranma 1/2 and it was in English. As soon as I heard Akane in English, it was like fingernails on a blackboard. Nope, can't do it. Dragonball/DBZ dub'd...perfect garbage. Sorry.
Yeah. I love 'em though, I used to watch Naruto fansubbed back in the day before they started really doing it professionally. Some times you take what you can get lol. Still, they can make for some great laughs. Bad fansub + and/or mis-written = win.
they are so funny. You know that the people doing these shows don't start out having the stuff clowned on like this, but you can't help it when sometimes they get sub'd so bad that you have the police saying to come out with your pants down. ummm ok. like that happens all the time lol
