I've got the same sort of stuff lying around, haha, but keep at it! After all, I (finally) finished something that is actually worthy of being submitted to a publishing company (and it will be, once my other beta readers get back to me).

I used fan-fiction to improve, but I was lucky to fall in with such a supportive group. Still, people eagerly awaiting "the next chapter" may help to motivate. Have you tried something like FictionPress and posting something to see how people respond to what you write?
