You should definitely give at least the first book a shot. It's so dark and enticing I loved it from the start <3. The movie is worth watching if you already own it, and the other two books you shouldn't touch with a fifty foot stick. Don't do it.
Funny, I was up until that late too reading Catching Fire. I nearly threw my laptop several times towards the end, the first half was endurable, a little confusing but I think it still sounded like it was from the same universe (though I secretly wished that Peeta would punch Katniss in the face every now and then), survival and all.
I loved the books and I enjoyed the movies, though several key things were overlooked! Mockingjay, not just a damn pin to protect your damn sister, chemistry with Peeta, THERE WAS SO MUCH OF THAT, WHERE DID IT ALL GO? The Cornucopia, for sure, though I was imagining an upside down tuba, and the whole Peeta's ARTIFICIAL LEG? You can't ignore that! YOU REALLY JUST CAN'T.
(Rereads the line about Sam v. Alex) *SPIT-TAKE* I DON'T KNOW WHY I NEVER THOUGHT OF ALEX BUT HE WOULD'VE BEEN SO PERFECT! THE SMILE, THE LOOKS, THE ENTIRE BEACH STUD LOOK ABOUT HIM! UGGGHHH, MOVIE, Y U NO PICK RIGHT ACTOR?!
I honestly thought Liam was Cinna, or something. Because when I imagined Gale I imagined someone a lot... bigger. Someone on Chris Hemsworth's size (funny thing though, Chris and Josh are starring in Red Dawn, SMALL WORLD THAT HOLLYWOOD) and a little scruffier. Liam looks too much like the injured boy toy. I think that's what they were going for... Damn you Hollywood.
And, honestly, I don't think there's anyone more perfect for Peeta than Josh. There were times when I didn't even recognize him, he was so adorable, and love struck, and perfect, and PEETA... Sorry, tangent. Peeta. Peeniss. Done.
It's funny, my one friend is just now getting into the books and he is like texting me every 15 minutes with some new complaint about the plot. He must've been up until 3:00am last night trying to finish Catching Fire.
But I have to say, I really prefer the books as opposed to the film. I liked the film, don't get me wrong (it's a lot better than most book adaptions in that genre), but I felt it missed on a few things and wasn't as imaginative as I had pictured. I thought the cornucopia was very disappointing... And I also heard who they just cast to play Finnick in the next film and I'm so incredibly pissed off that it's not Alex Pettyfer. Geesus.
I think Jennifer Lawrence played an amazing Katniss, even though she wasn't who I had originally pictured as playing her. And Josh did a fairly decent job as Peeta (he was exactly how I imagined him in the books, just shorter). I didn't like Liam for Gale at all, though. Just a totally different look than I was going for.
