Makes sense, makes sense. Reminds me of a chapter from Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun....sometimes people think they can get away without having backgrounds, but people get lost without them...especially if the background makes no sense.
Haha, YAY REVIEWS. It's fun to blab about things. :^D
Thanks! It's up to you, haha. It's really short, only took me like 45 minutes to read this morning. :V
Hm hm, I see your point! :o It's true, there was some degree of benefit in leaving out backgrounds in that the pages never felt crowded... and (as you said) the reader could focus on the characters. It also supported the light, kind of floaty feeling the author seemed to be going for.
But sometimes it got a little too floaty, and the comic didn't feel grounded. For instance, here, I feel like I'm in a kind of empty void reading this page. Are we at school? Are we walking to school? Are we just in Oono's mind, and he's imagining Takeuchi and his friends...??? Idk, maybe the ambiguity and void-y feeling was the point, but it made it confusing (and a little hollow) nonetheless.
Looking back, the artist would also go from a page or so where there's no background to a page with some background... which worked when a scene is supposed to be light and floaty (romantic, I suppose?), followed by grounding into reality. Idk, I'm still thinking it would have benefited to use more backgrounds in certain areas... if there's more grounded spots to compare the floaty spots to, the floaty spots will feel more floaty and the grounded spots will feel more grounded. SO MAYBE... BACKGROUNDS COULD HAVE ADDED SOME CONTRAST IN MOOD... WHICH MIGHT HAVE BEEN A GOOD THING, IDK.
Idk if it made any sense reading that, but there's some thought on that. xD NO ORGANIZATION, WHOOP.
Oooh! This is a cool post! Yeah, I feel I should do stuff like this as well! XD
I think you did a really good in-depth review of this! It made me consider reading it or not. I think I might but...hrmm...will I? That is the question, isn't it? (Too many questions)
I do want to ask, though, about your criticism of the backgrounds. Did the lack of detailed backgrounds detract from the understanding of the story, the expression of emotion, etc. I feel like sometimes mangaka can get away with no backgrounds as long as the story is still clear. Maybe the focus is only on the emotions of the characters.

I LOVE GEKKAN SHOUJO NOZAKI-KUN. *-*/ ♥ But yeah, that's basically it. Gotta have enough backgrounds to prevent confusion and stuff. .3.b
