Exactly. He did it, trying to find the power to protect them and in the end lost them both. Watching that duel at the end of epi III and the duel in IV has such meaning. After the Emperor ordered the massacre and subsequent hunting and killing of the entire order, to find his old master still alive? You know how pissed he was. And then of course, which I never really read about, he finds out that it was his own son that blew up the Death Star. That's why I always loved epi V, because he just hunted him down and confronted his own son, just to see how powerful he was and to see if he had what it took to take down the Emperor. Cutting his hand off....well that was just tough love and him pissed. Palpatine really did a number. Setting himself up and of course like you said, manipulating Lord Vader. He reigned for 20 years. The man knew what he was doing the entire time, from Darth Maul all the way to Lord Vader. And Vader was the worst cuz he had nothing to lose. He thought he had lost his family and that Ben was dead a long time ago. Ah how fate would have it that his own daughter would be a part of the Rebellion and that his son would join it as well. The galaxy really is that small, isn't it?
I like the prequels a lot as well, as well as the original movies. As Lucas says, it's all one long story meant to watch as a whole. As you can guess, my fav is Obi-Wan, through all of the movies. I love that character, and I mean hey, he beat the chosen one in a one on one duel.
But yeah, I'm with ya on Vader's stance. He really is the victim of the whole series. The slave boy (who never should have been trained as a Jedi), to the padawan who had a Master that was like, the quote on quote, perfect Jedi... who he could never raise up to. Who might every well have become a great Jedi if Palpatine hadn't been corrupting him from the beginning. His whole life he had the title of Chosen one hanging over him, he never got to grow on his own without it, and with Palpatine's influence yeah... I just see him as the biggest victim of fate ever. And I find it so sad that he pushed everyone he held close to him away and forced them to turn on him... mainly Obi_wan (who he loved like a father) and Padme... when all he wanted originally was to keep those two safe.
I don't care what anybody says, I loved the entire series. Yea, the prequels kind of screwed up the original, but so what. Nothing can touch the originals. Period. What I loved about the prequels were how they showed the different styles of fighting with the lightsabers. Lord Vader later on had a basic style but that was cuz of the suit. And I maybe the only one that enjoyed the whole 'Lord Vader' story. How he was like Edward Elric and how he was willing to do whatever needed to be done to get what he wanted and that was his wife safe and sound. He made a deal and stuck with it. That means he's the most misunderstood badass in the galaxy.
