I was wondering that as well. Cause those shows give Hulu the permission to show it, and it has commercials and all, so it seems more like TV than anything else. And you can't upload stuff to it like youtube, so I would guess they'd be fine.
I was just thinking bout Hulu. I wonder if that's legit and won't fall under this whole government bill. I know some sites linked Hulu for like Naruto and Bleach as well as others. I have so much to catch up on with Naruto Shippuuden. Bleach, I'm just like 2 epi from being caught up
Kinda off topic, but that's why I freaking love Hulu lol. They air a lot of great animes weekly, I know they air shows a week behind what they are aired in Japan, but still, I love it. It's where the hubby and I watch Naruto, and where I am getting him caught up on Bleach slowly.
Yea but like that site I go to to watch shows, some of them I swear I had never heard of before. Which can mean that some of them haven't been released here. So how exactly can I get those or watch them? Yea double edge alright. Just like the books as well
I definitely agree to that. Especially if you are buy a show as it's dubbed and done. But generally, if you want until the whole thing is finished, you can buy the whole boxset for a decent price. I bout the whole set of Cowboy Bebop for like 50 bucks, something like that, and the however many seasons off Kenshin for 80. It's really not worth it to buy a series as it's being published.
It is still kind of expensive, I agree to that. Although if I really love it, I will buy it eventually to support all the people who made it, to encourage them to make more. To show that I enjoy a show. And another good side is that when they are finally released in the US the material is spread around more places. More sites have it to stream (whether they should or not lol) and that's when AMV's and stuff really start to get made. The shows get much more publicity that way and it draws in new people to watch it.
So like I mentioned, a double edged sword there. It has it's good and bad points.
I was having a talk sort of like this just yesterday when I was talking about ACTA/SOPA/PIPA. I'd love to buy the discs, but paying 20 bucks for a disc that has at times 3 epi...isn't that a bit too much? And yea your right about the shows being done so that you could go to your local Best Buy or Moviestop and buy the set...but still they seriously overcharge for the shows. Importing them, I was able to buy a set of the 1st 25 or 26 epi of Dragonball for 30 bucks. Buying that here, you're talking at least 60+
It's a double edged sword really. Because as much as I hate the dubs that funimation and the others do... I love that they do it. Because when they take an anime and dub it, they release those nice quality blue rays and DVDs that are so easy to buy here in the US instead of having to import it. And then I just switch it to Japanese with subtitles lol. So as much as dubs annoy me, I do like it when an anime or show is released in the US.
I think that's the whole issue right there, the dedication to the craft. Some of the really successful English va's are just that, ACTORS.
It seems all to often, the reason dubs suck is cause you can tell that the people doing the voices aren't actors. The emotion, the ability to vary their voice just isn't there because you can tell they aren't trained actors. And it makes a HUGE difference in making a believable dub.
Like Crispin Freeman and Steven Blum. They are really good voice actors for games and animes because they ARE actors who can project emotion into their voice, along with doing different voices and such.
I've just been burned too many times with dub'd shows. You hit it right on the money as far as females doing the voices for kids. And the Japanese have a dedication to the craft. The female that did the voice for Son Goku in Dragonball, did it throughout the entire Dragonball series, which includes DBZ, DBGT, the movies and the video games. Same female
I count the cards into the whole bad editing thing lol, along with stupid name changes. And I want to kick every American I hear pronounce Naruto, with the whole NAAruto accent in the junk.
There are some shows, like Naruto, FMA (either series), D Gray Man, and Blood+ that I refuse to watch the dub. It seems like when they have a teenage character's voice to do, like Allen Walker, Naruto, or Edward Elric... they just CAN'T get any good English actors for it. At least the Japanese are smart and have females do the younger males and the children in a show so it sounds more natural that some dude trying to play a younger kid.
I should note though... that Hellsing's dub... it pretty darn good. One of the rare few I enjoy. Crispin Freeman's laugh especially, is so close to the japanese VA, it's awesome.
But you forget with YGO how they changed the cards themselves so as not to 'offend' us Americans. Dark Magician is one example. The original name being Black Magician. O my....that's going to make me want to worship the devil. No we need to change the name. Ass clowns. You are totally right. They take the most violent of shows and make the kiddy. Dude, Gundam Wing, I didn't even know what Duo's real name was cuz I say it Dub'd. But when I bought the discs and heard him say that he was a Shinigami (God of Death) that was so badass. Once again, mentioning God and you have problems. Stupid
That's funny cause I used to hate wide screen too when I was young... now I love it lol. There are some dubs I don't mind, like Cowboy Bebop, it's not so bad when they stay close to the original material. But sadly, most shows fail that when they try. OMFG, Naruto being one of the worst of them, and Yu-Gi-Oh. Naruto is NOT a kids show for crying out loud, and I hate it when they edit a show to make it fit that criteria. And YGO isn't exactly a kid's show either, and it has the worst editing, they take out swear words, lengthen skimpy girls outfits for heavens sake, and remove guns. Bullshit.
I once made the mistake of thinking Dragonball Z dub'd was the shit....then Cartoon Network pissed me off by repeating the same dame epi and I had to get fansubs. Boy was I ever wrong. I became a pure fansub fan ever since. Idk it's like sometimes the dub's are ok but in DBZ they seriously made it too cartoonish, adding sound fx that wasn't in the original and basically dumbing it down. Damn that. I want to watch it the way it was meant to be watched. That's why I also love watching movies widescreen....and that was something I hated back in the days but thanks to Episode V on Sci-Fi that all changed
Haha, well Roy IS a bastard, but for a while he's really going to seem like the unlikable kind of bastard though... and most people want to punch him in the face during episode 17 lol. But Al does make the comment later on, that Ed and Roy really are alike.
Most of the VA's for the original series came back for Brotherhood, so it's all good. The only change I didn't like as much was, as you can guess, in Roy's VA. I really loved that original guy, he had the snottiness down lol. But then I do love the guy who does Roy's voice now, he does Bak in D Gray Man... and my other favorite character, Urahara Kisuke!
I have to say I totally see what you mean about him. He is a bastard and a badass. I noticed that from the first series and the movie. I loved how even though he was lower ranked, as soon as he showed up, he took charge and everybody fell in line and listened.

Heh, in the beginning, ESPECIALLY when you get to ep 17 I think it is, Cold Flame... Mustang is going to seem like a real bastard.

And you know how much Mustang makes me fangirl right? lol Sooooooo sexy. *licks the screen* And the Roy/Ed one makes me purrrrrr.
Edit: And good gawd, watching that vid with Envy right now... oh that dub is cringe worthy. Envy sounds HORRIBLE.
