Well, I'm pretty bad at starting a conversations, so I didn't really enjoy talking with people I met. I always kept quiet in a corner and do my own stuffs. :)
So I just drop by to say 'Good luck!!!' XD
Talk to people about things you both may enjoy. When you can speak knowledgeably about subject, and people can see that you are passionate about something, they respond.
Make it interesting, and engage them in conversation. If they dont like something you love, ask them for specific examples, dont let them get off cheap.
If you see someone getting bored at the conversation, switch topics and see if that sparks a more lively conversation.

i'm doing the same thing this year too!
i guess if i gave you a tip it would be:
Stay open to everyone, because you'll never know them unless you give them a chance.
(if that makes any sense...)
