Ah, I don't like Monster, it's too creepy for me.
AND WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT, BLEACH GOING DOWN HILL? JUST CAUSE THERE WERE 40 EPISODES OF FILLERS, AND IT TAKES A MONTH TO FINISH A BATTLE BETWEEN TWO PEOPLE DOESN'T MEAN IT STILL ISN'T AWESOOOOOOOOOOME!
WE'RE GOING INTO FLASHBACK MODE NOW! IT'S HOT AND AWESOME! AND AIZEN'S GONNA FIGHT SOME CAPITANS!
It's always surreal for me to see people extol the virtues of mostly Jump series and nothing else. When I look at my list of favorites (and I'm going to make this obvious throughout the course of the week), it's made up of tons of different genres and styles. People think I'm being an elitist when I try to bring this up, but I don't love shows like Monster because they have a smaller following than Death Note. I love them because they're awesome.
And, likewise, I don't mind people who say that anime isn't their thing. But saying all anime is one way or another bothers me like nothing else. And I think there are some stories that can bridge the gap for non-fans - my dad can't get into animation either, but he still loved Howl's Moving Castle.

I would've had a hard time restraining the homicidal urge as well, so you aren't alone there =P
I've read the first volume of the Monster manga but still haven't watced the series. I suppose I should get around to it sometime.
And that guy's argument is flimsy at best. How many anime has he actually seen? Certainly not enough to lable "all anime" as cliched with 2D characters. I dislike when people make broad, sweeping claims in their ignorance.
I find it hideously ironic that people point to Jump series as somehow being examples of extraordinary or stereotype-defying anime. There's a certain danger, also, in using any one story as the basis of one's argument; it creates the risk of an escalating debate in which one finds oneself trying to hold, say, Death Note up against the entire English literary canon.
I don't really care whether or not people dig anime, but I'd prefer for them to at least be aware of the genuine variety out there. Of course, there are also those like my dad, who just can't get into 2-D material regardless of the story or style. I respect that... I have my own issues when it comes to engaging with particular forms of entertainment, and I figure that's okay as long as it doesn't lead me to writing it off for everyone, not just myself.

Shin's badass.
I recall I said I had Monster on the list way back when. And I know I need to get on top of that now. Because torture is never a bad thing.
I'll see what I can do, little lady. And I'm totally looking forward to this little series from ya.
