Personally, I'm a subs person. At least the voice actors there don't get replaced halfway through the series. That's what bugs me most about dubs.
I guess it sometimes depends on which you fall in love with first. One of the first subbed anime I saw was Naruto. When it was dubbed, I wanted to hear how the voices sounded in English. Mostly, it sounded wrong to me. While I thought Sasuke's dub actor did a pretty good job, Shino's just makes me cringe.
On the other hand, my first anime was the dub of Sailor Moon, so I'm more used to the dub voices (when the actors aren't being replaced, as I mentioned earlier). I watched some fan subs much later on, and it was so weird hearing them speaking Japanese. The one that took me most off-guard was Luna. She sounded like how I'd imagine a talking cat would, not Mary Poppins.
The one drawback with subs is when two different characters are talking at the same time and saying two different things. Yes, there are dashes to let the viewer know that two people are talking, but who's saying what? That's really the biggest drawback I can see with subs, coming from the viewpoint of a fast reader.
I seem to be arguing on both sides here. I don't HATE dubs; I just like subs better.

Dubs were and still are a very important part of the whole Anime experience because it's what everyone sees first and if they say they didn't, they're lying.
English is the language most people here speak so we see a foreign product translated we immediately make our own opinions on whether the product is watchable in our language, the most classic case being Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon which was a terrible dub.
In a number of cases particular those anime set in Japan or tsudo-Japan, subs are better but in anime where it isn't that Japanese or the theme is heavily westernized like say Cowboy Bebop & Trigun then it makes more sense for it to be in English.
People say dubs aren't pure and give it unwanted hatred, I say be grateful that there are companies who want to bring Anime to our country.
Of course they'll dub anime, it's standard in European countries to do the same and there's never any complaints from them, equally Japan dubs all our stuff in their language.
Another thing to bare in mind is that some people can't read or in my case, can't read fast enough, so I find it frustrating having to rewind a DVD just read what's there, this gets worst in sub only releases; might be why I didn't rate Mayo Chiki or Akikan so highly.
To conclude, I don't think there's a clear right answer just personal preferences but I don't agree with unfair dub hate.

subbed all the way! *sighs* though they can do a good job at getting the tone of characters to sound similar the emotion is far more engaging in subbed

I'd say I watch 80% dubs. Those I watch in sub are either because there's no dub or I feel it doesn't work in English.
