Angel Beats! Review

One week later, I finally get this up...

Angel Beats! was known to be one of the, if not the, most emotional anime of 2012, quickly causing people to fall in love with it. I, personally, like, but not love, it.

Plot Summary

Our main character, wakes up without knowing where he is, who he is (amnesia), or what's going on. He soon learns that he is existing in a sort of purgatory setting where people who had an unsatisfactory death can come to regain what they had lost.

Story

The story does well in the beginning, but as the anime goes on, things feel too rushed and without real detail or good explaining.

I know it's meant to be emotional, but because of its rushed nature, it was hard for me to physically cry during it. I would feel heartstrings pulled, but virtually any anime can do that if they tried. Some of the relationships formed felt forced, too. However, I did go back and watch one of the saddest moments in it, I did end up tearing up, so it does score points for that.

Not to mention the gigantic plothole obviously just shoved in there to explain something that really didn't need to be explained.

7.1

Characters

Angel Beats! features a large cast of interesting characters, but... because of its large cast, a lot of characters get overlooked, and would often not get the explaining that they would rightfully deserve. I would find myself looking at a character or two, thinking... "Who is he/she, again?"

However, when the do focus on a character, they do it amazingly well.

7.5

Animation

The animation for Angel Beats! is stunning. The colors really help characters stand out, and... the whole thing is beautiful.

8.8

Music

Both the opening and ending are beautiful, both in music and in animation. Same with other (and somewhat plentiful) songs with lyrics during the anime, but when it comes to pure instrumental background, I never found anything of note.

8.9

Overall

Beautiful music and animation, but lacking in the character and story departments. This is a good one to watch at least once, and decide if it floats your boat enough to become one to watch again and again.

I ship Hinata and Yui. I ship them hard.

Also, I don't think they could have done the final ending song any better. Really.
