Otaku Attraction: We Spoil Nothing

It's Friday and you know what that means. It's time for another Otaku Attraction for the masses (and on the front page, no less)!

Thanks to the folks that sent a video my way again this week; you guys make the OA possible when my YouTube search skills fail. Good Job!

This week, Koneko Krysta helped me start getting into the Halloween spirit by showing me this amazing Death Note video entitled "Spoil". You can tell that a lot of time and energy went into this piece, as there is a LOT of craftsmanship apparent in the add-on images, transitions and even the bit of lip-synching in the later part of the video. It's all very smooth and everything used in it fits the song very well (as a side note, this video now has me addicted to Celldweller; go figure). I recommend viewing it in HD on the YouTube site, but for those that don't mind a little YouTubitis in their stuff, take a look below.

That's all she wrote for this week, but be sure to send in your video suggestions (espcially really Halloween-y ones!) to [email protected]. For past videos, and videos that didn't make the cut here, head on over to the OA World. See you next week!

Caption Battle: Boom, Headshot.

"It's that time again..."
"To go boldly where no man has gone before?"
"To discuss the modern obsolescence of split infinitives?"
"No... it's time for this week's caption battle!"

But first, last week's winners:

In third place, speaking mostly truth: twilight luna!

And you thought rabid yaoi fans were scary....

In second place, dryly returning to the top three after a time's hiatus: Calaya!

Once the pictures were developed, it became clear what had happened to the photographer.

And in the coveted first place... for making the people laugh... Dark Lord XIII!

Hungry Hungry Hippos! Hungry Hungry Hippos!

So yes. Des', if you ever find any more horrifyingly traumatic nightmare fueled screencaps, I'd love to have 'em! But in the meantime, this week...

So this week's screencap comes courtesy of SakuraKatana and features the anime series Full Metal Panic!: The Second Raid. Girl in glasses is Kyoko Tokiwa, girl with blue hair is Kaname Chidori, and guy with his face in the ground is Sousuke Sagara. Have at it:

You know the drill: type up the funniest, wittiest, most original caption you can think of for the screencap above in the comments below. Also, if any of you would like some tips on writing a great caption, you can find those here.

And like always, theOtaku is open to all submissions and suggestions for weekly feature content. You have a screencap you want used, you can PM me and we can do somethin' about it. Heh, unless I'm busy with the other five thousand site-related things... but it'll only be temporary!

New Site + Feature

Late last night we unveiled a new site, a WORLDS directory. Use it to find interesting WORLDS or to keep motivated to better maintain your own WORLDS. We have over 7000 WORLDS in our universe so no matter who you are there's something for you.

Here are two quick notes about how it works:

(1) By default all WORLDS are sorted by a Quality Score. This score takes five different variables into account, so it's not just what WORLD is most popular or what WORLD has the most posts. There are many other considerations.

(2) Every WORLD that's listed under a category (for example Naruto) is hand-checked to make sure that category is its primary focus. If we didn't do this then each category would be filled with personal and spam WORLDS.

In addition to our new directory we also display your WORLD's rank in your backroom. Rank is updated every once in a while in random intervals and since we're always tweaking the formula we use to calculate rank, you shouldn't be surprised if sometimes there are big jumps or falls.

We hope you enjoy this new site and new features.

theOtaku.com's Halloween Writer's Jam

Calling all writers of theOtaku.com...

Today, The Writers Bloc of theOtaku.com proudly announces a fun little holiday event to encourage everyone to put hand to keyboard...

Halloween is only half a month away, and thus far we, theOtaku.com, haven't done enough to make that point! No art collaborations, no contests, nothing! Well I for one have decided that that's just silly.

So let's all write some stories before the month's out! For the rest of October leading up to Halloween, I present:

The 2008 theOtaku.com Halloween Writer's Jam!

If you or any of your friends have any ideas for some Halloween/horror themed stories, poems, essays or articles, I encourage you all to give it a go. Just about anything will go, whether it be series-based fanfiction or your own original ideas.

While the primary reason for this Writers' Jam is to get people interested in beefing up their Fan Word portfolios for a special occasion (as well as special mentions on the Official theOtaku.com World), we have one further bit of incentive to get in on this little event:

A panel of judges will be selecting one of these works as a special "Editor's Choice". Aside from the obvious bragging rights, the author of the chosen work shall also receive a free year's subscription to theOtaku's Premium Service! If you don't have a premium account yet, you'll receive the most complete Version Vibrant experience available; if you already do, you've just saved yourself some cash for next year!

Submission Guidelines for the Writer's Jam are as followed:

  • All submissions must adhere to basic Fan Word standards such as spelling, grammar, and rating (along with the "Nominate For Fan Words Publication" box checked).
  • All submissions must have "halloween" in the submission's tags.

Naturally, the short-notice nature of this event doesn't really suit long multi-part works, so one-shots and the like are the name of the game here.

If there are any more questions or thoughts about this, feel free to comment here.

And as always, be sure to swing through The Writers Bloc World for any and all of your writing needs and assistance.

We have about 15 or 16 days before Halloween - I'm really hoping for a nice turnout this year. Happy writing, guys!
