I went there today, and as a young Otaku with my little six year-old sister there was a bit dissapointed. I was very upset that they didn't have any of the popular anime as you said. And frankly the anime girl head thingy just freaked me out. And also must say that some of the anime in the anime section was a bit mature. For example, a bloody mess of a guy being held my his shirt, poured with gasoline then seeing the men holding his shirt lighting a match saying, "I've come to destroy the alien." And Paprika a naked girl cut open revealing another naked girl,whom is lifted up, then kissed and...that's when I left. Needless to say, I wasn't very happy...

Hmm, sounds like a slightly (innocently) misguided attempt at a ground-breaking exhibition. Along the lines of what Adam has said, it really does appear that the curators just stuck with what they knew. Not that that can't produce an interesting exhibition, but if they were sincerely trying to create a ground-breaking exhibition, it is my opinion that they needed to do a lot more research.
That being said, there were probably many interesting gems at the exhibition. Cao Fei's work was shown at Sydney Uni by a guest lecturer, a contemporary artist from NY. I thought it was quite an interesting comment on the subculture of cosplay. I'd consider that an interesting gem...

The curators were all heavyweights in the industry, for example Will Wright curated the video game gallery. The only issue is that he himself admitted that there were a lot of games he didn't have much experience in (for example he wasn't that familiar with Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid), so he chose the games that in his mind were most interesting to his own development. I assume that the others were similar in that regard
Manga and anime seem to attract certain people who simply like to stare at the pretty pictures. To them, it is simply artistic expression unleashed, not a story with an intricate plotline, killer graphics, believeable characters and incredible workmanship.
What also could have been a contributor was a lack of personal understanding, as timechaser has mentioned. Maybe they had certain, vaague ideas, but were unable to mesh them together due to innocent ignorance.
Even the professionals get it wrong too. *sigh*rolls*eyes* -_-'
Either way, it'd be a good 10-12 hour drive to get to Vancouver just for this; I'd recommend a full Vancouver vacation first (though luckily there's plenty to see as well).

I get the sense that nobody involved in the project had much of any clue about what they were working with. They may have known some stuff about it, but not enough to really make it worthy of what they were trying to accomplish.
Having the more obscure, artsy stuff is nice, but that fails to encompass the whole of the world and history they were trying to put on display.

@Adam:
If that's the case, it does seem weird that they'd leave out Miyazaki at the very least.
