i feel abit sad but im still ok with it C:
congrats to the finalists.
@ everyone else who complaining: I agree and disagree guys. I have a tablet and i used the digital program PS for this contest too.But its unfair that they didnt choose a few of the traditional ones. There were some very awesome designs that didnt make in either. But its not our choice to make of what they think and choose who wins and stuff.
and for those who are mad they didnt get in. Get over it. Its a contest for fun not life-death situation. We can always try next year :D
BAHH i think i just made my explaination so hard to understand OTL;; darn distractions making me think too quick.
Congrats to the Final 10! I wished that mine was chosen (it was under the username 'KupoMatic') but that's okay... =D. It just gives me more motivation to work harder in the next contest and I hope that everyone else feels the same way, too...
Wow... I caught on at a good time... =D. There's always been the debate of traditional works versus digital. Mine was done traditionally (with Copic markers and Micro Pens - my choice of weapons) and edited through Photoshop. Anyone can make works in any way - it's just that digital is more convenient and takes less time. Any of the digital pieces submitted could be done traditionally - it would just take more time. Since I don't have ready access to Photoshop, I have to do the best that I can with what I have (and I like it even more that way). You don't need a tablet or anything digital to make good work.. just passion and pure drive.
And as everyone else said.. there's more to it than producing the artwork. Keep in mind when you're sending in the final product (everything post-production and such even if it means cleaning the smallest smudge). If something is going to be mass-produced, then it must look clean and professional.
All in all, this is just more experience that (I hope) everyone can learn from and be ready for the next contest. Thanks for a great contest, Adam! And please post up the next one soon so I (and everyone else) can start working! =D
Well, I suppose we should be finding out the winner soon enough! Congrats to them ahead of time ;)
However, I don't really find it necessary for people to argue over digital/traditional media. Just b/c no traditional work was selected in the finals, doesn't mean it's not appreciated nor that it doesn't stand a chance. Nor do I agree about people's statements saying that traditional work takes more time/effort, b/c digital work can be just as difficult. There may be a certain ease of digital work that is not presented when doing things traditionally, but I don't think it's proper to bash either one for any reason. (I work in both, but prefer traditional myself). Like what's been said: what matter is the end result.
And in a contest, presentation is everything. As others have said, it is sometimes hard to get a decent scan, so if you don't clean it up with adjustments, well, that's on you. Also, in the long scheme of things-- digital medium reproduces better, which is a big plus since the winner's piece will be printed on programs and such~ So, I think we should all take a breather-- it's just a contest and there's always next year ^_^
I didn't submit my entry since it was already too late, but my laser mouse was lame so I actually used the 2 inch touchpad on my laptop (super ubber cool) - resources are out there so adapt = )
For all the people complaining that only photoshop entries made it in...
...I've never used photoshop a day in my life... But it's not the only digital program out there... For example, all my art (including the piece that made it into the final 10 I drew on Flash. And there are tons of programs that are available to download for free, or have free trials. Also, a lot of people say they can't use their digital programs for lack of a pen tablet... LIES. I didn't get a pen tablet until last year... And my work was STILL very good. Sure, it may take a bit longer, but that shouldn't mean anything to someone who's really dedicated.
If you did some research you would see that there is free software that is the equal to photoshop (GIMP). And while I don't hate you :-), using the excuse that you don't have the same tools is pretty lame.
CONGRATS to EVERYONE!!!!

@everyone complaining:
It's a contest. When I did my picks I didn't even look at who the artist was, so I don't have any idea if they've been here since the birth of theO or since 3 days ago. And you know what? I don't care. As far as digital vs. traditional. If you hand-draw your artwork that's awesome, but if you're submitting it for a big open contest for a major con mascot you'd better scan it in and clean it up before submitting. Because in the end how you create the artwork doesn't matter one bit. My good friend Jason Martin from ArtPlayMix.com said it best. Art isn't about how you do it, it's about the end result. You can talk all day about how awesome a method you used or how you spent two years doing something, but that's not going to sell a piece. And you know what? He hand-draws every piece, and then scans it in, cleans it up and colors it to make it look professional.
All that said, I stand by my picks and I also think that the 10 pieces that made it into the finals are all worthy of being there.
Also, stop complaining because one person apparently has two pieces in the finals. The rules didn't prohibit multiple entries.
Again, the rules said to think about "Anime" and "New York City", not New York the state in general.
In closing, please try to remember that while theO is running this contest for the NYAF, it was free to enter and they have no responsibility to make their judging process or criteria transparent to you, only to the NYAF, whose final decision it will be anyway.

Wow lots of controversey. You people are scary when it comes to competition -3-
Well I think all of the pieces are very lovely. I honestly can't choose my favorite because each one has something about them that makes it so adorable. I'd really hate to be one of the judges they have a tough job ahead of them.
Either way good luck to you all. And a little message for the trouble makers; Chill out. It's not like this is the last contest we're ever going to have assembled. BossMan did great getting this all together and making sure everything was fair. So don't bash him.
~Colleen the Great~X_X
EDIT: I just noticed something. In most of the artworks people are focusing on New York City. A little hint in case we ever have another NYAF contest that could help you stand out; New York City is only a small part of New York. There's more to New York than crowded sidewalks and taxi cabs.
I would find it near impossible to decide between them. They all bring their own charm with them, from extreme chibi to quite traditional and all have cleverly added the theme required. Very well done to all
Congrats to the finalists! I'm glad some of my favorites made it into the top 10! I would've been left wondering if the hadn't.
I just wanna say that last years mascot contest had a traditional piece in the top 10 and MAN did it look good! The competition was steep last year too! Traditional is hard business. I know I'd never be able to do it. At least, it looked traditional. It's scary what one can mimic with a computer now a days.
The last soapbox comment I have to say is, it doesn't matter wether or not your a theOtaku.com member or not (I've never even heard of this site before now) what it really boils down to is what looks good. You'll find that professionally some businesses choose what looks good rather than who submitted it or how long they worked on it. These are going to be used for a major convention so they kind of need to pick the ones they think best represent them as well as the ones that look good.
Well, congrats to those who've placed and great work to everybody else! :D
I am deeply honored that I made it into the top 10. I really didn't think I'd make it since there were some amazing pieces on there.
You know, people seem to really be going nuts with the whole digital vs. traditional aspect of it. Amazingly enough, *this* piece was my very first digital art ever! So the argument that only those who know digital well got into the top 10, isn't true. I didn't know what the heck I was doing besides trial and error!
Yes, it did take less time but from what people have already stated, a sad part of this technological world is that almost all animes are now done digitally. I prefer traditional art personally but I went digital for this one because I used common sense a little...if you're going to mass-produce a piece, I *know* that digital is the better choice! I would love to do this drawing again in my regular 'ol Prismacolors but I decided digital seemed the right post for this contest.
And I'm sorry, it's not true that only those who are Adam's "closest friends" are who made it to the top 10. This contest was judged by what? 3 different groups of people? Adam not being the sole chooser of it.
I admit, I would prefer a regular Otaku member to win it...not saying it to be myself!...just a regular member since I'm an avid Otaku member and like being a regular on any site, you'd want someone from "your neck of the woods" to win. BloodRedArab feels happy that he/she is a contest finalist, but is now sad that everyone is going to hate him/her for it... ^^;
And yes, I can see both sides of these arguments perfectly well, I'm not biased just because I'm a finalist. And perhaps in a future contest, I'll try out my traditional art skills, and see how well they fare in comparison.
BloodRedArab is now going to shut his/her mouth before he/she is pummeled with rocks by... Well... Everyone. D:
It wasn't based on points or votes, we each came up with a list of our favorites and then we compared and compromised on the final list, so there were some entries that we liked on our end that didn't make it and some entries on their end that they liked that didn't make it. All in all I think it was the fairest way any contest could be judged.
All the entries came in on time, some of the artists were new so we had to manually approve their works, which makes it look like they came in late.
Since we let people submit more than one entry per contest there was always the chance that one person would have more than one work in the finals.
Adam might you elaborate on the judging method? So the entries were based by 2 sides, so there would be just 2 different votes? What happens when an entry only has 1 vote?
It confuses me cause just having 2 votes seems a bit awkward, doesn't it? Was there a point system?
Grats to all that placed btw. I wish you guys the best of luck. ^^
Baron Von Kumichou (Founder) | Posted 06/19/08 | Reply
There's submission time and approval time, which are different
As explained the process for choosing the finalists was fairly simple...some traditional non-digital submissions were VERY close to making the cut but when we merged the lists they didn't quite make it.
I don't know if the entry was really late. I submitted mine a few minutes before 11:59, but it still registered it as the next day. So it might have just been the system.
I completely agree with you Miss Iruka. 100% It does seem it did favor only digital works. Like you said they might as well just have said to not bother making a traditional work.
Woah dude, awesome. There were a lot of really great entries and I'm glad to have been chosen.
It is a bit disheartening to not see any traditional pieces, but I guess I wouldn't think they'd be as marketable as digital works. :< I don't know, they were lovely to look at, in any case.
these were all wonderfully amazing! i love all the entries! i really like pamplemouse's. but i must ask, for those who were finalists in the last nyaf competition, when will we find out who finally won? just wondering. ^^
Sinbad of Sindria (Otaku Eternal) | Posted 06/19/08 | Reply
Not only that one of those entries was late...I mean really it seems unfair...I know I am not the best but why not just bend the rules a little. Also tell those who can only draw by hand not to enter because it really just isn't worth our time because we do not get recognized...I am not saying that I deserve it but some of those hand drawn pictures were really good too....but it seems to win a contest you need to be able to color on a computer and such...
Sinbad of Sindria (Otaku Eternal) | Posted 06/19/08 | Reply
That actually is 9 finalists not ten since you picked the same person twice...I mean there were some lovely artworks and all but one of the persons on the site only submitted one piece of art for the contest...hmmm Oh well.
Congrats to all the finalists :)
Although I'm a little confused, isn't it unfair that two of the artworks were posted on 6/19 which is after the 6/18 deadline?

I completely agree with you Miss Iruka. 100% It does seem it did favor only digital works. Like you said they might as well just have said to not bother making a traditional work.

Woah dude, awesome. There were a lot of really great entries and I'm glad to have been chosen.
It is a bit disheartening to not see any traditional pieces, but I guess I wouldn't think they'd be as marketable as digital works. :< I don't know, they were lovely to look at, in any case.

That actually is 9 finalists not ten since you picked the same person twice...I mean there were some lovely artworks and all but one of the persons on the site only submitted one piece of art for the contest...hmmm Oh well.
Good luck finalists!

Congrats to all the finalists :)
Although I'm a little confused, isn't it unfair that two of the artworks were posted on 6/19 which is after the 6/18 deadline?
