When I have some time this weekend, I'll check them out and see if I can be a productive contributor. It's been a few years since I've even seen snippets of Lain, so I might not be able to effectively present why I don't like it so much.
Featuring content is a good idea. That kind of thing will draw other members who aren't on the boards over there.
Off topic but I'm still loving that comment reply feature.
I think different styles of anime are more likely to be opular in different veins. Popular in a more usual sense would be something that becomes mainstream, like Naruto or Pokemon. But then, they've only become popular because of the attention they've had, and because they were popular in japane even before that. If something's big in Japan, chances are it'll be brought overseas with an aim for it to produce a similar success. Anime itself is still rather a cult medium; certainly in the UK Pokemon was the only one to really break into mainstream popular culture.
From an anime fan's point of view, anything can be popular. You'll get diehard fans of anything, pretty much :p I just wonder if certain genres/series are more successful because they already have large audiences waiting for them (Shonen Jump series, for example).
Hm, I might just weigh in on the Worst Anime topic, I've only ever come across one anime that's really rubbed me the wrong way, Serial Experiments Lain. The horror stories I could tell about that series.
It's hard to tell what really makes an anime "popular", but I will say this, with all the hype some series have had, I wasn't nearly as impressed by them as I was led to believe they were.
I like this idea, featuring content from the forum here so it gets more attention, and maybe pulls people over there or gets people who aren't so active over there (people have called me a forum before because I like to lurk without posting a lot) a little more interested in what's going on.
