My grandfather was a soldier too and I think that kind of things can change a person more than we could imagine and that we will never be able to understand... I will definitely pray for your grandfather... It pains me as well to hear that, because it really seems that you so close to each other. I am sure that your grandfather really loves and even if he said at that time that he would like to die, he said that probably just because of the pain at that moment.
