In addition to her Yamask, I was also thinking of having her use a Cubone.
Anyway, the thought of the dead person becoming a Yamask as sort of a divine punishment did occur to me. Another possibility is that the person in question had a tragic death with several unresolved issues in life, but instead of becoming a normal ghost they wound up as a Pokemon. But as you said, it's impossible to tell either way.
.....Okay, here's how I'm going to approach your OC and her Yamask.
Writer's Standpoint: OMG. That's such a cool idea! I absolutely love it! So creative and really awesome! Good job!
Regular Person Standpoint: ........HOLY CRAP OMG THAT'S FRICKIN SCARY
Really cool idea though! XD
Hmm...maybe they become Yamask because they loved Pokemon? ...or better, maybe because they HATED Pokemon and treated Pokemon badly, therefore need to live their entire afterlife as a Pokemon....who knows! ^^;
Yeah, Yamask and Cofagrigus are certainly among the more frightening Ghost-types (one has to wonder what causes the spirit of a dead human to become a Yamask).
I actually have an idea for a Pokemon OC who has a Yamask and can understand what it says. She even gives the Yamask the name it had when it was alive as a nickname.
I have to agree that these Pokemon creep me the heck out. I've never actually used one on my team, mostly because I prefer the Litwick line of Ghost-types, so I also haven't had any experience using one. But I do know how incredibly annoying that Mummy ability is. Even when it didn't mess up my strategy it was annoying. XP I find Yamask sad in an incredibly creepy way. Cofagrigus just flat out scares me. You don't really think of many Pokemon as having truly malevolent intentions, but this Pokemon actually kills people...you know, for kids! :D

Who knows? Either way, there's a lot of potential.

Ooh, I like the Cubone! Gotta love those tragic Pokemon XD
I like your idea, too...it could be a mix of all of those...I wonder if the creators thought this far into this XD
