Wobbuffet was good for a few site gags, but like the rest of the group he did get tiring after awhile.
You do have a point, a lot of TV protagonists don't really thing logically (notable exceptions as the great Mr. Spock and Mr. Data of Star Trek). But that's especially true in a kids' show like Pokemon. Plus let's face it, Ash isn't the sharpest tool in the shed.
The thing that bugs me most about their little motto is that Ash and the others just stand there and watch while they do it. If it were me I'd just blast them five seconds into it.
And I guess Meowth does have his moments. And Wobbuffet was a good counterpart to Misty's Psyduck.
To be honest, I absolutely loved Meowth. Might have been just me ^^; My favorite episode was his backstory. Jessie was the one who actually annoyed me sometimes, but I still liked her anyway. I probably would have liked her more if, like you said, they focused on her mom. I had no idea about that until just recently. And James <3 It helped that his whole backstory focused on my favorite Pokemon at the time, Growlithe.
GROWLIE WHY TT~TT
And, while the motto did get a little annoying from time to time, I still love it, the original one anyway. It's just amazing when you're in a group of people and you shout out, "Prepare for trouble!" and everyone starts filling in the lines even to "Meowth, that's right!" "WOOOOOOBUFFET!"

He had potential long ago, but it started to fizzle out when he went to the Hoenn Region.
Truth be told, I think he's gotten dumber and even more immature.

Ah, but that would require a thing called logic, see, and very few tv show protagonists have that.
I'll be honest and say that I found Wobbuffet the most annoying of the bunch, but he was good for a laugh at times XD
