N does seem more like a rival character than a villain. You even face him after beating the Elite Four like Blue/Gary/(insert name here) in the Generation One games.
But yeah, I never really thought of N as a villain either. He was more like a good guy doing bad things, and mainly because he was being used by someone who was truly evil.
I'm glad that they tried out a not-so-bad villain, but N is honestly not one of my favorite villains. I tried ranking him on my list of favorites, and honestly, I can't see where he fits. He barely seems like a villain to me at all, more like a rival than anything.
(puts on artisty-hipster-glasses and examines) He's just not, er, eeeeeeeeviiiiiil enough...
I dunno, just my personal opinion. He's still a cool character, but the villain fangirl inside of me refuses to fangirl over him, and I've fangirled over almost every villain in every single Pokemon game. So I have mixed opinions. Oh well.

I read the term "anti-villain" used for N once.

@Darkarax:
I never noticed that parallel with Gen I until now...yeah, that makes sense...So Black and White have three rivals, how exciting!
So I guess he's a quasi-villain? Good guy doing bad things describes him really well XD

Oh, N. N, N, N... Where do I begin?
Uh oh, here comes the villain rant...I'm glad that they tried out a not-so-bad villain, but N is honestly not one of my favorite villains.
