Chapter 1: Weird Night and Average Morning
Leo looked out across the clear night sky over London. It had been a who year since he and his twin sister Luna had left Neo Domino City to live with their parents. It was on these clear nights that Leo would think of his old friends, Yusei, Jack, Crow, and Aki, and the days they spent in Neo Domino. Every now and than, Leo would hear about Jack and Crow in the Pro Dueling Leagues. As expected, both of them were quickly becoming champions. Occasionally, Leo and Luna would get phone calls from Aki, and both of them would hear about how her medical studies were going. The only member of Team 5D's that the twins hadn't heard from was Yusei. Because of that Leo would often think of Yusei the most. Leo vowed that when he became a champion duelist one day, he would return to Neo Domino to show Yusei his strength.
Leo glanced over at the clock on his night stand. It was 10:30 PM, and it was a school night. Just as he was about to go to bed, he he saw a bright ball of light shoot across the sky. Leo watched as the ball of light pass over the city, until it vanished somewhere over the distant horizon. He wondered if it was a meteor that crashed.
The next morning, Leo walked to school while reading the newspaper. It seemed that he wasn't the only one who saw that strange light in the sky. Several other people reported seeing it as well. The authorities claimed that it was only an abnormally bright meteor that passed over the city, but according to the article, there was no sign of where the meteor had crashed.
"Leo, look out!" shouted a voice from behind.
Leo looked up in time to see the light pole he walked into.
"Honestly, sometimes I wonder if you even have a brain." Luna said as she walked passed.
Leo finished rubbing his face and caught up to his sister.
"So did you see that weird light last night?" Leo asked.
"I was already in bed. What were you doing up?" Luna asked in response.
"I was just thinking about the old team." Leo answered, looking thoughtfully up at the sky as they walked.
"Oh." Luna replied. There were times when Luna would stay up late thinking about their friends from Team 5D's too.
"Hey Leo, Luna!" a voice from behind shouted.
The twins stopped and turned to see who was calling them. It was their classmate, Roxanne Lane. Roxanne was a thin, freckled girl with long dark-blue black hair done in a side ponytail. She was friendly and had a cheerful personality. And for some reason, Leo always seemed to get nervous around her.
"Mind if I walk with you guys?" Roxanne asked in her usual cheerful tone.
"Not at all." Luna answered.
Roxanne turned to look at Leo. Leo blushed and started to fidget a bit. Nervously he answered: "Um, uh, sure, g-go right ahead."
As the three resumed walking, Luna began to snicker.
"What's so funny?" Roxanne asked, blissfully unaware of the joke.
"Oh nothing." Luna replied in a mischievous tone.
Leo was quite aware of what his sister found so amusing. He had no idea why he always acted like a geek in front of Roxanne. The three reached the London Duel Academy. There was still twenty minutes before class would start, so the three decided to hang out in front of the school for awhile.
"Hey Luna, Roxanne!" A voice called.
The three turned and saw a boy with short brown hair wearing a pair of shades coming down the school steps. It was their classmate, Luke Sampson. Luke was the most popular kid at the London Duel Academy. He was top in his Dueling classes, top in his academic classes, and all the girls seemed to like him. Leo couldn't stand the guy.
"How are you two ladies doing this morning?" Luke asked the girls. Then he turned and saw Leo. "Oh, hi Lenny."
"The name's Leo." Leo responded through gritted teeth. Luke ignored him and continued taking to the girls.
"So did you girls see that weird light in the sky last night?" Luke asked as he leaned against the railing with his arms crossed.
"I was too busy studying on the computer." Roxanne answered. "I did hear the noise it made, but at the time I thought it was just a low flying jet."
"I guess I was asleep at the time." Luna answered. "But Leo says he saw it."
Luke glanced over at Leo. "Is that true Lenny?"
"Yeah... So what?" Leo responded with a note of irritation in his voice.
"I saw it too." Luke answered. "So did my dad. Of course he was at the observatory at the time I was at home. Anyway, my dad said that he thinks he knows where it went down. He said he'd take me there after school. do you two girls want to come with?"
Leo's irritation began to swell. What Leo didn't like the most about Luke was that he seemed to pay way too much attention to both Luna and Roxanne. Why Leo was bothered by Luke being friendly with Roxanne, he didn't really understand. All he knew was that it drove him nuts.
Luke glanced back over at Leo. "Oh, you can come too Lenny."
That was the last straw. It was one thing for Luke to completely ignore Leo and get his name wrong, but inviting him along on a trip like that just because he was the brother of a girl that he liked was a step too far.
"That tares it!" Leo shouted as he pointed at Luke. "I'm challenging you to a duel! Right here! Right now!"
All the kids in front of the school went silent. They all stared at Leo as if he had just revealed the meaning of life or the secret of what really happened at area 51. Luna merely sighed and shook her head.
Luke pulled down his shades a little and looked at Leo quizzically with his blue eyes. "You want to duel me Lenny? Okay, it's your funeral."
The two duelists moved to a spot in front of the steps and got out their duel disks. All of the other students present surrounded them in order to better watch the grudge match. It was Leo's first time dueling Luke, so he was a little bit nervous. As soon as the life points on their duel disks were set to 4000, both of them drew five cards. Leo looked at his opening hand. It consisted of Morphtronic Boomboxen, Morphtronic Celphon, Morphtronic Magnen, and two equip cards, Morphtronic Rusty Engine and Megamorph. A promising hand.
"I'll let you go first Lenny." Luke said in a gracious manner.
Leo became more irritated. He didn't need Luke's charity. Leo swore that he'd wipe the smug expression off of Luke's face by the time the duel was over. Leo drew his first card and got Morphtronic Videon. He knew exactly what his first move would be.
"I summon Morphtronic Videon in Defense Mode!" Leo announced as he placed the card in the duel disk. A giant digital camera appeared in front of Leo as soon as he played the card.
"Next I equip Morphtronic Videon with Morphtronic Rusty Engine!" Leo announced as he played the Spell card. "When Morphtronic Videon is in Defense Mode, it gains 800 DEF for every card equipped to it. So Morphtronic Videon's DEF is now 1800!"
Leo thought that he made a good opening move. Even if Luke could summon a monster strong enough to take out Videon, Morphtronic Rusty Engine's effect would kick in and deal Luke 1000 points of damage. Leo knew that he'd take 1000 points of damage too if that happened, but he'd also be 1000 points closer to taking Luke down.
"So these are the Morphtronic monsters your sister told me about." Luke said. "Too bad that camera won't be around long enough to record you losing."
Leo got more ticked off. It would have been fine if Luke had learned about his Morphtronic deck from another student or by seeing him duel. But the fact that Luke had learned about his deck from his own sister was something that Leo couldn't stand.
"My move!" Luke announced as he drew his first card. Luke looked at the card and smirked.
"I summon Marauding Captain in Attack Mode!" Luke announced. As he place the card in his duel disk, an unshaven warrior in medieval armor and a tattered cape appeared in front of Luke.
"When Marauding Captain is Normal Summoned, I can Special Summon a level four or lower monster from my hand! So I Special Summon Tune Warrior!" Luke announced as he played another card.
Another warrior in red, speaker like armor and headphone jacks for hands appeared next to Marauding Captain.
"Next I Tune the level three Marauding Captain into the level three Tune Warrior!" Luke announced. Tune warrior then turned into three rings made of green light, which surrounded Marauding Captain and turned him into three white balls of light. As that happened, Luke chanted: "Spirits of Earth now come together! Cry out for the crusader of justice! Synchro Summon! Charge forth! Gaia Knight, the Force of Earth!"
In a burst of light, a cybernetic knight in blue and yellow armor carrying two red lances appeared on the field riding a purple cybernetic horse. Gaia Knight had 2600 ATK, which was far greater than Videon's 1800 DEF. Leo wasn't worried though.
"Now I equip Gaia Knight with the Spell card Fairy Meteor Crush!" Luke announced. "Now when Gaia Knight destroys a Defense Position monster in battle, my opponent takes battle damage equal to the difference between Gaia Knight's ATK and the destroyed monster's DEF!"
Leo suddenly became very worried. He didn't anticipate Luke playing any cards that would allow one of his monsters to inflict piercing damage.
"Gaia Knight, attack!" Luke commanded. "Spiral Lance!"
Gaia Knight charged forth on his horse and stuck the giant digital camera with his lance. Videon shattered into golden triangles when hit and disappeared. Due to the effect of Fairy Meteor Crush, Leo's life points dropped from 4000 to 3200. After that, Morphtronic Rusty Engine's effect kicked in, reducing Luke's life points from 4000 to 3000, and dropping Leo's life points from 3200 to 2200. Leo's defensive strategy completely blew up in his face.
"Pretty lame defense there Lenny." Luke commented. "I end my turn!"
Leo started to get ticked off again.
"My move!" Leo announced as he drew his next card.
Leo look at the card and smirked. It was just the card that he needed.
"I summon Morphtronic Scopen in Attack Mode!" Leo announced as he played the card had just drawn.
A large microscope appeared on the field in front of Leo and transformed into an oddly shaped robot.
"Now I activate Morphtronic Scopen's effect!" Leo announced. "When Morphtronic Scopen is on the field in Attack Mode, I can Special Summon a level four Morphtronic monster from my hand! I Special Summon Morphtronic Boomboxen!"
A large red boom box appeared on the field next to Scopen and transformed into another robot.
"Next I Tune my level four Morphtronic Boomboxen into my level three Morphtronic Scopen!" Leo announced. Morphtronic Scopen turned into three rings of green light which surrounded Morphtronic Boomboxen and turned it into four white balls of light. As that happened, Leo chanted: "Docking strength with courage to protect world peace! Synchro Summon! Envoy of love and justice, Power Tool and Dragon!"
In a burst of white light, a yellow and grey mechanical dragon appeared on the field. The right arm of the dragon ended in a blue scoop one might find on a back-hoe. Mounted on the dragon's left arm was jack hammer like tool. On the end of the dragon's tail was the spade of a shovel.
"Now I activate Power Tool Dragon's effect, which let's me add one random Equip Spell from my deck to my hand!" Leo announced.
A card popped out from Leo's deck. Leo picked up the card, grinned, and placed the card in his hand.
"Now equip Power Tool Dragon with Power Pickaxe!" Leo announced as he placed the card in his duel disk. Power Tool Dragon's back-hoe claw transformed into an orange Pickaxe like tool.
"Next I activate the effect of Power Pickaxe!" Leo announced. "By removing a monster in my opponent's Graveyard from play, Power Tool Dragon's ATK is increased by 500 until the End Phase of my turn! So now I remove Marauding Captain From the Graveyard!"
The Marauding Captain card popped out of the Graveyard slot on Luke's duel disk, and Power Tool Dragon's attack rose from 2300 to 2800.
"Power Tool Dragon attack Gaia Knight!" Leo commanded. "Crafty Break!"
Power Tool Dragon struck Gaia Knight with its Pickaxe tool. The knight shattered into gold triangles and disappeared. The attack dropped Luke's life points from 3000 to 2800. Leo had finally gained the upper hand.
"I end my turn!" Leo announced smugly. With the end of the turn, Power Tool Dragon's ATK dropped back down to 2300.
"Not a bad move." Luke said with a smirk.
Leo gritted his teeth. He didn't need that smug jerk's compliments.
"My turn!" Luke announced as he drew his next card.
"First I summon Dark Blade in Attack Mode!" Luck announced as he placed a new card in his duel disk.
A knight in black and silver armor appeared on the field in front of Luke.
"Next I play Monster Reborn, which let's me Special Summon Tune Warrior from the Graveyard!" Luke announced.
Tune Warrior reappeared on the field next to Dark Blade. Leo suddenly regretted not removing Tune Warrior with Power Pickaxe instead of Marauding Captain.
"Now I Tune my level four Dark Blade into the level three Tune Warrior!" Luke announced. Once again, Tune warrior turned into three rings of green light that surrounded Dark Blade, which turned into four balls of white light. As this happened, Luke chanted: "Spirits of vengeance now come together! Cry out for the iron destroyer! Synchro Summon! Arise! Scrap Archfiend!"
In a burst of light, a large demon made out of scrap metal appeared on the field in front of Luke. Its red eyes blazed like fire. Scrap Archfiend had 2700 ATK, making it stronger than Power Tool Dragon.
"Now, Scrap Archfiend! Attack Power Tool Dragon!" Luke announced. "Rusty Claw!"
The claws on Scrap Archfiend began to glow red. It lunged towards Power Tool Dragon to deliver the death blow.
"I activate Power Tool Dragon's effect!" Leo announced. "By sending one Spell card equipped to Power Tool Dragon to the Graveyard, I can negate its destruction!"
Power Tool Dragon blocked Scrap Archfiend's attack with its Pickaxe, which shattered and turned back into a back-hoe scoop. Despite that, Leo still took damage. His life points dropped down from 2200 to 1800.
"Nice save there!" Luke complimented. "I end my turn!"
Leo gritted his teeth in frustration. There was no way that he would let Luke beat him.
"My turn!" Leo announced as he drew another card.
"First I activate Power Tool Dragon's Power Search effect to add another random Equip Spell from my deck to my hand!" Leo announced.
Another card popped out of Leo's deck, which he added to his hand.
"Now I equip Power Tool Dragon with Double Tool D&C!" Leo announced as he played the card in his duel disk.
The back-hoe scoop on Power Tool Dragon's right arm changed into a circular saw like tool. While the jack hammer tool mounted on Power Tool Dragon's left arm changed into a drill.
"Power Tool Dragon gains 1000 ATK points during my turn!" Leo explained. Power Tool Dragon's ATK rose to 3300.
"Now, Power Tool Dragon! Attack Scrap Archfiend!" Leo commanded. "Crafty Break!"
Power Tool Dragon struck Scrap Archfiend with its saw blade, shattering it into gold triangles. Luke's life points dropped from 2800 to 2200.
"I end my turn!" Leo announced.
The duel was still pretty even. Leo admitted to himself that Luke was pretty good, but he wasn't going to let Luke beat him. What bother Leo the most though was that he couldn't seem to wipe that smug expression from Luke's face. Nothing Leo did could shake Luke up.
"Looks like it's time I stopped playing around." Luke said. "My move!"
Luke drew a new card and grinned. "Looks like this duel is about over."
"I play the Spell card Miracle Synchro Fusion!" Luke announced. "By removing Gaia Knight, the Force of Earth and Scrap Archfiend from my Graveyard, I can Fusion Summon Gaia Drake, the Universal Force!"
The two Synchro monsters Luke previously summoned popped out of the Graveyard slot on his duel disk. A gigantic vortex appeared in the air above Luke, and from the vortex appeared a cybernetic knight in black, silver, red, and gold armor that carried two black lances with gold trim. The knight rode a black pegasus that wore armor similar to the knight's. Gaia Drake had 3500 ATK, far more powerful than Power Tool Dragon.
"Now, Gaia Drake! Attack Power Tool Dragon!" Luke commanded. "Ultra Spiral Lance!"
Gaia Drake thrust the lance he carried in his right hand, creating a spiraling wave of energy that headed for Power Tool Dragon.
Leo panicked. "I activate Power Tool Dragon's effect to prevent its destruction by sending Double TooL C&D to the Graveyard!"
Power Tool Dragon crossed its arms to block the attack. The tools on its arms shattered and reverted back to their original forms the moment the spiral wave hit. Leo suddenly realized that he screwed up. If he hadn't used Power Tool Dragon's effect, Double Tool C&D would have destroyed Gaia Drake after it attacked. Than Leo could have struck back with one of the other monsters that he drew. That last attack had dropped Leo's life points from 1800 to 600. It wasn't looking good.
"My, aren't we desperate?" Luke said. "I'll set one card face-down on the field and end my turn!"
"My turn!" Leo announced as he drew one more card.
Things didn't look too good. Leo didn't have any monsters in his hand that could beat Gaia Drake, and it was a little risky using Power Tool Dragon's effect again. If anything, all he could do was find a card that could at least keep it on the field for another turn. Then Leo remembered one of the cards he drew on his first turn, Megamorph. Leo thought that it just might be the card that could turn the duel around.
"I equip Power Tool Dragon with Megamorph, doubling its ATK!" Leo announced.
Power Tool Dragon doubled in size, and its ATK rose from 2300 to 4600.
"Power Tool Dragon, attack Gaia Drake!" Leo commanded. "Crafty Break!"
Power Tool Dragon flew towards Gaia Drake to attack.
"I don't think so." Luke said. "Activate Trap, Magic Cylinder! Now your attack gets bounced back to you!"
Leo suddenly froze. He realized that in his eagerness to attack he had completely forgotten about the card Luke had set just before he ended his last turn. Two large purple tubes appeared in the air above Luke. Power Tool Dragon was sucked into the tube on the left side, and was shot back out of the right. Power Tool Dragon kept going and struck Leo with its back-hoe claw. Leo's life points dropped down to zero and all the monsters on the field disappeared. Luke had won the duel.
"Well that was fun." Luke said as he walked over to Leo. "I'm actually disappointed a little though Lenny. Your sister lead me to believe that you were a much better duelist."
Suddenly the school bell began to ring, signaling the start of classes.
"Oh, there's the bell. I better get going." Luke said, turning to leave. "Talk to me again if you want a rematch Lenny. Later ladies."
All the spectators of the duel also began to walk into the school. Leo stood where he was, gritting his teeth in frustration at his loss. He had made himself look like an idiot in front of both Luna and Roxanne. He was only glad that Yusei and Jack weren't there to see his humiliating defeat. As Luna walked into the school, she turned back and saw Leo standing like an angry statue.
"Come on Leo! You'll be late!" Luna called.
Grudgingly, Leo began to walk towards the entrance, still gritting his teeth. His fists clenched in frustration. It looked like it was going to be one of those days.
