Really? I thought you knew I'd played saxophone. o3o Well, you know now anyway. :P I got into it around... 4th grade I believe. Played until the end of 8th grade, then I was pretty much forced to stop by my major heart operation in '96, which left me without enough spare breath to play anymore. -3-;
I'm not so keen on more modern jazz. I like Big Band in its heyday. I think jazz from then on got a bit more complicated and experimental, and can often sound atonal to me. *shrugs*
I never knew you played the sax and liked big band! :O! *clings* Where have you been all my life, Toki-nii?
Oh, yeah. That's right. Florida. :P
Between my dad (who picked it up from his parents/grandparents) and the old people in the veteran's bars I have the tendency to hang around in, I picked up a lot of big band just by listening to it. Country music too, from Hank Williams Sr. to Trace Adkins, but that's a different ballgame. My dad's even been trying to convince one of us to go see the Brian Setzer Orchestra with him. Not Glenn Miller or Tommy Dorsey by any means, but still it'd be kinda cool.
Yes! Finally I'm not the only person on here obsessed with that likes swing/big band!
I love 'In the Mood', but there are honestly so many amazing artists from that time that I can't pick a favorite. My favorite current day one is, without a doubt, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy though.

From watching chimps to watching swing dancing... I'm getting all sorts of silly thoughts now. XP

I learned how to swing dance to this song, then danced with some friends for Jane Goodall. She was tapping her feet along too!

...I know they are. I was just saying that they're my favorite current day one. Since there are a few (just not nearly as well known) out there

Lol, the archetypal Big Band songs for me would have to be It Don't Mean a Thing (if it ain't got that Swing) and Sing, Sing, Sing (with a Swing) XP

I remember my class in high school chosed this song in a performance to celebrate the year 1900-2000 music. I use to snap my fingers quite a bit.
Wow, I wish I was inspired to play an instrument. Well, maybe the harmonica works XD.

Can't remember if I played this during my short stint in jazz band, but I know I had a book with it, so I may have at least practiced it on my own.

Being a metalhead first, this came to mind when I heard Glenn Miller: Course of Empire "Infested!" (Darwin Goodman Mix)
A metal band with two drummers sampling swing music makes for interesting results. (I love cranking this song.)

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is a swing revival band from the '90s . . .
. . . still awesome, though . . .

Totally played this in jazz band. Trumpets are damn fun for his music.
See, now I'm wondering where my Gleen Miller CD went . . .

Yes, you are not alone! 8D
I have a lot of other favorites too, but "In The Mood" was kind of THE archetypal Big Band song to me. ^^
