As far as the book making sense, that was never a problem. In fact, it made nothing but sense. My beef with it was that, bar one single instance, I always knew exactly what was going to happen at minimum a chapter before it happened.
The first book is The Eye of the World. From what I've read online from Wiki and fans is that the first five books are really good, but 6-9 kind of meander as he expanded the story and added in a lot of new characters, and not really advancing the story much, but after that they pick up again, especially with the last three that have been written following Robert Jordan's death. Brandon Sanderson has kind of infused the series with a fresh energy.
I've also read that New Spring, although it's a prequel, makes more sense if you've read most of the series first.
And you can find the order of the books here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheel_of_Time#Books_in_the_series
It is pretty damn epic. Every time I hear it I kick myself for not reading the books sooner. Better late than never though, and I want to see how far I can get with the final book coming out next year. :)
Which book is the first in the series? All I've read so far has been New Spring—because it was bought for me—and I was kind of disappointed with the generic writing style. So any opportunity to begin from the actual beginning is one I'll jump at, so as to give the author a fair shot.
