Haha, I sound just like the“The good effort comment”prsn XD I'm just not used to giving constructive critisism, plus I've seen very bad cases of "constructive-critisism-gone-bad" and I don't wanna get involved in it >.< but I guess I can try to do it with my friends from now on ^^ Thanks for posting this up, it is very thoughtful and a great shout out to the world :3
*hugs*
I said something about comments on my WORLD like forever ago. XD; It was the same thing basically, but i believe you said it in a much better way. :3 *nods*
I like how you provided examples of the most common types of comment and divided the comment into little sections.
But sadly some people just aren't good at taking constructive criticism and become overly defensive when they receive it or even ignore/delete the comment. ):
Anyways! I'll try make more and better comments with the help of this guide! =D
So thank you very much for making it!

This helps so much! I must say this is a great way to improve on commenting. :)
xD especially since I'm very bad at commenting. I try using better words than "awesome" and "amazing" because it just seems to loose it's effect sometimes. ^^;
lol and sometimes I do add those gibberish in my comments. xD mostly because sometimes I just freak out and overload of complete awesomeness or excitement. 8D
but that's just me lol
anyways, thank you once again. This is wonderful advice~ ^^

Angel-kun, I know I'm late with commenting this but I just wanted to say THANK YOU for making this! People on this site do need to make better comments that inspire artists and not simply comment saying "I like it, great work" and things like that. Taking time and effort to comment other artists will often lead to them responding positively back to you and in turn it's mutually beneficial to both artists ^^ I really like how you broke the comments down as well, it gives an idea of both sides to the argument. I really think that this should be advertised a bit more to perhaps inspire people to give better comments~
And thank you Angel-kun for doing such a fantastic job on making comments ^^ You're such a nice person and it shows through everything you do! Keep it up my friend!<3

…How did I overlook this?
Anyways, great essay. Very rarely do I point out something that should be improved. I’m just afraid how some people may take it. Some can, some can’t. I’m not one of those people, and I doubt you are either, but some just can’t take the criticism. Plus the artist at least knows what they are doing right, and what people like. As you already said, it's good for morale.
Yeah, writing comments can be hard. I’m not very knowledgeable with art techniques and whatnot, but there’s always room for improvement—even in comments. You helped me out anyways.
I never did like pointing out what is wrong with a picture because trying to explain a picture in words is very difficult. Some things have to be seen, rather than read, to be properly understood. On the other hand, I like pointing out what I do like. When I see some detail in a piece of art that I like, I'll comment on the art. This way, the artist knows that someone sees something artistically good in her or his art. The artist then knows what strengths she or he has. I'll leave the finding of faults to others.
One more thing: I kind of like the short "I love your work!" comments. They are nice little moral boosters. I don't necessarily need three paragraphs per person, for these little sentences express more than a "hug" or "favorite" can.
exactly. its seems more than just me actualy recognize the problems with the comments here on theotaku. like the article, was well written, but saddly, i realy dont have much to say right now other than i like reading articles regarding this topic.
though personally, i don't like comments that suggest me to add or delete certain parts of the picture. like the example in the post about the dog and cat in the park with someone playing with it. i always feel like my pictures are my pictures, and what i put in my pictures are exactly what i want. it's good to get suggestions here and there, but stuff that is really explicit and detailed like a separate action happening that strays away from the focus is something i don't really enjoy reading. it makes me feel like they are the ones trying to control my picture. haha.. i'm really picky on what i put in my pictures. :) sometimes i put a lot of thought into my drawings - a drawing that kind of reflects how i feel - and suggestions like that from someone who does not understand why i drew that picture will make it feel as though they don't fully...understand it. xD it's hard to explain, but that is my individual view on comments like that. :) i never get mad when people say that though. i've gotten comments like those before. i just thank them for liking the picture. :)
A clear and concise breakdown on a topic that annoys the heck out of me. Everywhere you look, its comments like 'thats soooo bad' or the dreaded 'I hate that character'
I can understand the people who can't critisize because they don't know art well enough, but these people are usually positive and boost moral. Luckily too you get the odd few who offer advise and as long as the artist takes it as help and not insult, all is well. The dream comment usually involves saying what they like about a piece, then explaining where they think it can be improved.
The best way to look at it is that the people who stop by and pass a quick insult without offering any advise seldom have work of their own. They are all ready to say 'your work is trash' but not ready to prove they know what they are talking about. As for 'I hate *blank*, why did you do him/her?', for me they should just be flat out ignored.
I'm so glad you wrote and submitted this!! It's so very helpful. You really give good analyzation to the comment problems. I really encounter a lot of those!! And yet at the same time, I realize that I do some of that...just saying that something's good without any more detail or criticism. Good job. :3 Thanks again!
You should probably also consider us poor souls who like to comment on art now and again but haven't got a clue what they're talking about. =P We're pretty much restricted to not being able to offer much constructively because we just don't know how things are done, and therefore something like "the right arm proportions seemed a little off" feels bad since we can't suggest how to improve it.
And then there are the people who come in and say "meh, I've seen better", who royally tick me off. They probably deserve a snide mention.
You do make very nice comments on my art. You always have something positive to say, which is nice, but what i really love is the constructive critizism. I have to say, I personally am not great at giving comments, but your 4 steps may just help me out. =]

I admit I'm guilty of some of those things you pointed out, but these mean comments, they just need to stop they don't help all they do is get people riled up. What happened to the old theotaku where you think a link to this page should be in order. Man, I have been seeing these insensitive and just, not well done comments. I admit I'm guilty of some of those things you pointed out, but these mean comments, they just need to stop they don't help all they do is get people riled up. Well, Angel man I"ll go and thanks a lot for posting this.
Hmmm, very interesting....
Well, I don't do the thorough critic comment because of a)Time and b)Because possibly the artist might take offense to it or something....you know? Some people are very proud of their work and well....they might not take it lightly. >.> I dunno, I fear the people on the internet. O_O
LOL!
But I love how you split up the comment types. ^^
Hey Angel,
You have divided the comments very well! I really like how you wrote everything and you used very good examples. But keep in mind that not all people can comment a lot, due to time or they just find it difficult to criticize a drawing ^^
Anyway, very good and true! I'll keep this in mind when I comment ;)
Wow,never really realised you could divide comments like that...Hm,it's kind of hard to make the good comment all the time, since most people don't have much time and are busy,or are just too tired to think of a good comment but doesn't want to leave the artist with the thought that he or she isn't loved or something. But most of the time,I try to comment as good as I can, since if I don't,I'd just feel bad anyway,so...XD
But people should indeed try to do a better job sometimes,or at least give a good comment to your best friends, since, they're your best friends.XD
Hm,I think I'll do the same as CosmicSailor,I'll post this in my own journal on bot MyOtaku and TheOtaku...But not now, since I have lots to do,haha...-.-'
Lol,I really think it's fun talking like that on msn.XD but it's even more fun when we're both online, right? X3
Yeah! You tell em Angel! Although, I do leave simple comments that tend to just say wonderful and stuff...-_- But that's only :
1) I'm lazy
2) I don't have much free time.
But so true so true. People could do a bit better than with just a simple good job or wonderful or something. I like how you broke the commenting structure into little steps. I shall learn and learn them well!
Actually, I like the way you have taken and broken down the process of critiquing art. Having good examples as well should help readers along. I think I'll link to this post when I'm blogging again here, it's something that people should read and pass along to others.
