I was never that into the anime, although I watched it when I was younger. I was always about the games. Pokemon Blue remains one of my favorite games of all time. I stopped playing Pokemon after Gen II, however, I did buy the Gen I remake, LeafGreen. I recently replayed it and had a blast. It's made me feel that I want to try to get into Pokemon again. So maybe the games haven't changed, so much as you have. And maybe you can change back, if you want. Sorry for the wall of text, but your post made me think about my own relationship with Pokemon.
By the way, Mew is my favorite Pokemon.
