I had thought about putting Frankenstein on the list in the past, not to mention Dracula. The Count of Monte Cirsto's a good suggestion too. I've seen parts of a movie version once and was kind of into it. Plus I used the story itself as part of the inspiration for a Pokemon OC.
Anyway, thanks for your suggestions. And good to know that the SAO light novels are available.
It looks like the light novels of SAO are available in the US on Amazon.
As for book recommendations, I'd say Life As We Knew It (and the trilogy that follows, but at least get the first one - that one's great), Frankenstein (old but gold), The Count of Monte Cristo (Old but even more gold), The Great Gatsby (I'm sensing a pattern here), The Picture of Dorian Gray, Fahrenheit 451.
Uh .3.; for more contemporary novels, I'd say I Am Not A Serial Killer (and the following trilogy - horror with a bit of psychological mixed in) by Dan Wells, anything by John Saul (pretty good horror writer), The Fire Within (and the following series - one of my favorite fantasy series), The Guardians of Ga'Hoole (another of my favorite fantasy series - with owls!) The Pendragon series by D.J. MacHale (First book is The Merchant of Death - another pretty decent series, a mix of fantasy-ish and science fiction-ish genres), Chasing Vermeer (and the trilogy that follows - pretty good), the Uglies trilogy (one of my favorite dystopian series), The Last Book In The Universe (one of my favorite books ever), the Marked series (by Kristin and PC Cast - pretty good, haven't finished it, though) and...
You know what, I'm just going to leave it at that .3.;; Hopefully that's enough that you can see what you want and don't want to read.
You should definitely put I am The Messenger by Mark Zusack, also The Book Thief by the same author...Umm, also for variety and if you are interested in different cultures, Bastard of Istanbul by Elif Shafak will prove a good book. Also David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas and Number9Dream...A Million Little Pieces by James Fray.

@Darkarax:
Yes, it was, with Tom Hanks as the lead role. But, the novel is a lot better than the movie

@Darkarax:
The Count of Monte Cristo's amazing, both the book and the anime (though the anime doesn't quite follow the book).
And you're welcome. ^^
