Your story is very inspiring, and sad at the same time. I originally wanted to go to school for writing (drawing isn't a strong suit of mine, I prefer to write and was planning to do it professionally), you know, the whole English major, creative writing, plans to both write novels and poetry, as well become an editor since I enjoy reading pieces and correcting the typos, phrasing, and punctuation.
I started off with a major in terms of teaching. I was planning on teaching English with my English major, and writing on the side, and if that didn't work out then editing. However many people were on the sidelines telling me I wasn't going to be able to make a living with that and that I should be more practical and go into medical practices, you know with the medical assisting degrees or dental assisting degrees...but I suck at math, science, and have shaky hands when dealing with details. So I changed my major to Journalism. I thought focusing full time on becoming an editor would be more practical and focus on something I enjoyed too: Editing.
That didn't work out either. I got bored...turns out Journalism degrees were focused more on the news part and not so much the creative writing part...and I wanted to edit fictional books, not news pieces. So I talked to my boyfriend and he suggested I go into his major: Communication. He was great at it! Always good with spoken words, whereas I was great with written words. So he helped me speak to people more effectively (people always got mad when I spoke to them the way I speak, even though my intentions are innocent) and I helped him with writing his school papers (he would talk and I would write, then go back and edit it - whatever he said aloud - to proper formatting for papers).
But I found out that Communication wasn't my strong suit either...I could never make speeches in front of people.
Long story short, now, 4 years later of trying all the "practical" majors, I still have not graduated, I am unemployed (Worked at panda express for a year and a half, taking time off school for that since I didn't know what I wanted to do and figured an income was more important), and now I'm going back to school for a Certificate program. And I'm once again being told to go into Dental Assisting but I am thinking of becoming an Office Assistant with the Certificate Program. Not a very high income but it's a job and earns more than fast food and will allow me to live on my own while going back to school for an English major, hopefully. The reason I'm doing the one year thing is because now my boyfriend is about to graduate in a year with a Communication major, and possibly a Minor in Spanish, and I have nothing. Except experience serving food to hungry customers :p
So to end this rather detailed and long comment XD
You should be happy that you followed your dream and studied the thing that you love. Getting work in the fields you enjoy is tough, I admit. But if you're passionate about it, you'll find something and you'll be great at it, quoting my boyfriend :p
I understand you need to study something more practical to make a living, as I am doing now. But you have one up on me that you already used your time to do what you love. So what if after you get your practical degree, or even while you're studying it! While you're putting your feelers out there, some job that is in the Art and Animation field calls out to you...you'll be qualified already! You can start doing your dream job while finishing up your practical back up plan. Then you'll have work no matter where it is~
So I commend you
You have not let those people down, you worked hard and graduated! You tried looking for work, but I am pretty sure many of those teachers did the same thing. Graduated in the Art field, struggled to find work, and so sought to teach those who had the same passion as them. If anything, you could always teach with your degree
Farewell, and know that many people wish they had done what you did XD
