Chapter 2: The Mystery Girl With the Yellow Fox
The next day went just about any other day for Ken. He went to classes and studied on campus until about four-thirty, but for the entire day, Ken could not stop thinking about the strange figure he saw outside on the street the previous night. The one question on Ken's mind was if that the person he saw really was his friend Ryo. Ken still remembered the first time he met Ryo. It was about the same time he met his Digimon partner, Wormmon. When Ken was a young boy, he was pulled to the digital world for the first time. As soon as he arrived he met Wormmon and became a DigiDestined. Not long after that, Ken met Ryo, and was asked to help Ryo fight a powerful evil Digimon called Millenniummon. Ryo was not a normal DigiDestined, as he did not have a Digimon partner of his own. Instead, Ryo would temporarily team up with several different Digimon. Ken remembered how Ryo eventually defeated Millenniummon with his and Wormmon's help, but the explosion of Millenniummon's body left a spore of darkness in the back of Ken's neck. That dark spore would later turn Ken into an evil tyrant for a time, but back than, all was spore did was make Ken terribly sick.
Ryo and Wormmon tended to Ken for weeks before Ken was sent back to the human world. A few weeks later, Ken was contacted on the computer by Ryo through some kind of video communication from the digital world. Ryo told Ken that he was competing in some kind of tournament to find the strongest DigiDestined child. Ken, who was still not well enough to go back to the digital world, helped Ryo by giving him suggestions on how to defeat his opponents. In the end though, both Ken and Ryo found out that the tournament was a hoax, and that its real purpose was to train Ryo to fight Millenniummon, who had survived and evolved into a more powerful Digimon called Moon=Millenniummon. Ken could still remember how Ryo seemed to change when he found out the real purpose of the tournament. Ryo seemed to become colder, more distant. Ken did not watch Ryo's battle with Moon=Millenniummon, but from his computer, he did see the evil Digimon's castle explode with Ryo still in it. Ken could never believe that Ryo died in that explosion, and now it looked like Ryo had finally returned.
Ken returned home to his apartment, with Wormmon riding on his back. The green caterpillar Digimon usually went with Ken to the university in case a rampaging Digimon attacked. When Ken entered the apartment, he was greeted by Davis, who was lounging on the couch watching TV.
"Shouldn't you be at work right now?" Ken asked. Davis, who did not remove his eyes from the TV replied, "My boss gave me the afternoon off, so I thought I'd hang out here."
Suddenly the doorbell rang, and a chill ran down Ken's spine. For there was only one person who ever ran his doorbell. Ken opened the door, and sure enough, it was Yolei, Ken's girlfriend and fellow DigiDestined. With Yolie was her Digimon partner, Hawkmon. Ken had completely forgotten that Yolie was coming over that afternoon so that Ken could help her study for the finals of a class they were both in.
"Hi Ken, did I come at a bad time?" Yolie asked. Yolie had not come at a bad time, but Davis certainly did. Yolie had grown to dislike Davis over a little over the years. While Yolie still considered Davis a friend, she did not like the way that he would take advantage of Ken's hospitality every time he had a fight with Kari. Yolie also didn't like how Davis would treat Kari, whom Yolie had become good friends with over the years. Ken knew that once Yolie found out why Davis was back at his apartment this time, she would go ballistic. There was no avoiding the inevitable, though. "Um, no, it's not a bad time," Ken said replying to Yolie's question, "Come on in."
Yolie entered the apartment with Hawkmon, and when she glanced over to the couch, which Davis was laying on, the smile on her face quickly vanished.
"What is he doing back here again?" Yolie asked Ken with a very noticeable tone of irritation in her voice. Ken, who did not want to answer for he feared Yolie's wrath, replied,"Uh, I'll let Davis answer that question."
Yolei asked Davis why he was once again in Ken's apartment, and once Davis finished telling the story of the other girl at the video store, Yolie stood there looking dumbstruck. There was an awkward silence that seemed to last for hours, though in reality it was only half a minute. The three Digimon knew what was going to happen next as well as Ken did. Hawkmon quickly flew into the kitchen. Veemon dived under the couch, while Wormmon hid inside Ken's book bag. Ken could only stand there and watch. Than, like an erupting volcano, Yolie finally blew her top.
"Davis Motomiya you jerk! You slime ball! How could you cheat on Kari after she's put up with you all this time?!" Yolie shouted as she began tearing into Davis like he was tissue paper. It was a terrifying site to watch. Ken suddenly found himself wishing that he could leave his body and project his consciousness to Hawaii, or the digital world, or some distant planet that humankind had yet to discover. Ken was thankful that at least Yolie wasn't yelling at him. The shouting went on for about fifteen minutes, and ended with, "... and after all the times that Kari has taken you back, you cheat on her with some bimbo you met one night at the video store?! You are the most worthless human being, I HAVE EVER MET!"
Yolie stood there and caught her breath, an expression of rage still on her face. Davis sat there on the couch looking like a deer caught in headlights, his jaw hanging open. Nobody in the apartment moved or spoke for what seemed like ten minutes.
"Uh, Yolie why don't you and I go out and study at the park?" Ken asked, breaking the silence. Yolie turned to Ken, the expression on her face turning from rage to annoyance, and simply said, "Oh, alright."
Later at the park near Ken's apartment building, Ken and Yolie sat at a picnic table under the shade of a tall tree. As Wormmon and Hawkmon hung out on one of the tree branches, Ken and Yolie got out their books to study for their shared class, but studying was the furthest thing on their minds.
"Sometimes I don't know why you put up with Davis," Yolie said to Ken in an irritated tone, "Especially after he cheated on Kari."
"I'm mad at Davis for cheating on Kari too," Ken replied, "but he's my best friend, and I need to stick by him when things get rough for him, because I know he'd do the same for me."
Yolie paused and looked at Ken thoughtfully for a moment.
"Davis is still my friend too," Yolie said to Ken in a calm tone, "Even though he's a real idiot sometimes."
"Davis can be really stupid sometimes," Ken chuckled, "but he's a good guy. Even though he really screwed things up in Kari this time."
Suddenly there was an explosion in one of the buildings near the park. Ken and Yolie looked and saw emerging from the smoke what looked like a large black T-rex with red stripes and green plates running down its back. It was a Digimon, and Ken had seen this species before. The Digimon was a BlackTyrannomon, one of the most aggressive Digimon species out there. Ken and Yolie were about to have Wormmon and Hawkmon digivolve and do battle with the DarkTyrannomon, when they saw a shape move very fast and hit the large dinosaur Digimon in the nose, causing it to stagger backward. The shape landed back on the ground, revealing itself to be another Digimon.
This Digimon appeared as a tall bipedal fox with yellow and white fur. The fox had piercing blue eyes, and wore purple arm guards, each baring a yin-yang symbol. The DarkTyrannomon steadied itself and breathed a stream of fire at the yellow fox. At the last second, the fox Digimon jumped out of the way, not even getting singed. As Ken watched the fight, he noticed something rather strange. While everyone else in the park was running away screaming, Ken saw a young woman who was just standing there watching. The young woman appeared to be about Ken's age. She had medium length brown hair that came down to her shoulders. The girl's wardrobe consisted of a long black coat, brown jeans, black tennis shoes, a pair of sunglasses, and what appeared to be a t-shirt with a blue heart on it.
Ken saw that the girl didn't even look frightened. Suddenly, the girl pulled out what Ken thought looked like a Digivice from her coat. Ken noticed that the Digivice the girl was using looked completely different from the ones that he and the other DigiDestined used. The mystery girl than pulled out what Ken thought looked like a playing card of some kind.
"Here's a move I learned from my friend Jeri," Ken heard the girl shout. Than the girl swiped the card through the side of her Digivice, shouting, "Digi-modify! LadyDevimon card activate!"
Suddenly what looked like a woman with white hair, chalk white skin, red eyes, and a large left claw with red nails appeared above the fox Digimon. The woman wore a mask and torn cat suit made of oddly stitched together black leather. Ken recognized the woman as an evil Digimon called LadyDevimon. Suddenly, LadyDevimon dissolved into particles of data that went into the fox Digimon. The yellow fox's eyes turned pitch black, and than it launched a swarm of bats that devoured the DarkTyrannomon. With the DarkTyrannomon gone, the fox Digiomon's eyes turned back to normal.
Both Ken and Yolie were amazed at what they saw. As the girl turned to leave, Ken yelled after her. The girl paused as she saw Ken and Yolie running towards her. When Ken and Yolie got to where the girl was standing, the girl took off her sunglasses and gave both DigiDestined a quizzical look.
"Who are you?" Ken asked the girl, "Are you another DigiDestined?"
The brown haired girl seemed a little surprised when she heard the term, "DigiDestined." Then the girl looked down and saw Hawkmon land next to Yolie, and than her look of surprise quickly turned to a look of shock. She looked even more shocked when she saw Wormmon arrive a minute later. Wormmon was not known for his speed.
"I'm Rika Nonaka, and that's my partner, Renamon," the girl answered, pointing to the yellow fox Digimon, "Now who are you?"
"I'm Ken Ichijouji," Ken said, introducing himself, "and this is my girlfriend, Yolie Inoue."
The girl seemed more shocked than ever after Ken's introduction.
"This can't be," the girl said, "You guys are just characters from a TV show!"
