Glitch, the Summer of Mew

It took me about six or seven tries to activate the glitch properly. But eventually, I got it right. When the menu screen appeared, I instantly pressed the B button with a kind of steely focus. As the glitch details promised, Mew appeared. Despite its low level, I went about capturing Mew as I would any other legendary Pokemon. First, I paralyzed the wild Mew with my Pikachu's Thunder Wave attack. After that, I tried a Pokeball. It didn't work, as expected. Then I brought out the level nine Zubat I captured at Mt. Moon.

I began using Zubat to weaken Mew. When Mew was at half strength, I tried another Pokeball. It still didn't work. When Mew was brought down to about fifteen percent of its hit points, I stopped attacking and tried more Pokeballs. It must have taken four or five Pokeballs to capture Mew. Right after the capture, I saved the game. Then I deposited Zubat in the PC storage box at the Pokemon Center, and put Mew on my team. After I healed Mew, I saved my game and shut it off to take a ten-minute break.

During the capture of Mew and the break, several thoughts and feelings raced through my head. First, I couldn't believe that the glitch had actually worked. Next I thought about how unreal it was to have captured Mew myself, and to have the pink feline on my team. A bit later, I realized the uniqueness of the event. I've captured legendary Pokemon that lived in caves, abandoned buildings, ancient ruins, and sacred temples. I've also captured legendary Pokemon that were sealed in rocks and legendary Pokemon that would hide in the grass and run away as soon as they saw you. But I had never before captured a legendary Pokemon that was unlocked by using a glitch. Capturing Mew that night was my most unique Pokemon capture.

When I resumed the game that night, my next step was to raise Mew's level to where it was about even with the levels of my other Pokemon. That step went surprisingly quick. It might have been because Mew was a legendary Pokemon, but it also helped that the levels of my other Pokemon were in the teens at the time. At about 1:30 AM, I quit for the night and went to bed. Because of the excitement of the earlier events of the night, it took me about an hour to get to sleep. Another realization I had that night was that Mew was always in the generation one games, hidden away, and I wished at that time that I had known about the glitch years ago when I had started playing the Pokemon games.

The next day, I played the game for about half an hour or so. Then I went to mow the lawn, which took over an hour, at least. The intense hot weather of that day made mowing the lawn an exhausting job. After lying on the couch for about an hour or two, I got back to the game. I think I defeated at least three or four of the eight gym leaders that day. On the afternoon of the next day, I defeated the remaining gym leaders. Along the way, I captured the legendary thunder bird, Zapdos. Zapdos was the first legendary Pokemon I had ever encountered in the games, but that's another story. I added Zapdos to my team, and after training some of my weaker Pokemon, I headed to the seventh gym. Along the way, I captured the legendary bird of ice, Articuno.
