My advice is to start with something easy that's also recognizable. I bet there are hundreds of tutorials online about how to find the cosplay that's right for you. Or you don't have to cosplay at all (though I think it's more fun if you do).
Call it karma. Call it luck. Me, I just don't give a... BOUNCE!
I feel like a different person at a con. I can go up to people that I don't know and talk to them. I can burst into song at any moment. I can act like a total weirdo and NO ONE CARES.
There's a certain camaraderie among con-goers because you all have a common interest to bond over. I did karaoke this year, and one person admitted to having stage fright. The audience (myself included) encouragingly cheered the person on.
I see some of the same people at photoshoots every year-- we recognize each other, even. Like that guy who always cosplays as Kimblee who hugged me one year. Or the lady who cosplays as gender-bent Bradley and always pretends to threaten me with a sword. Unfortunately, I got to the photoshoot late this year, and then they cut it short. I was in, like, one or two photos.
This year felt especially surreal to me for some reason. I was like, "I didn't think I'd be able to do it this year, but I'M HERE!"
I can go on and on about conventions but I think I'll stop now before I get carried away.

Man. That sounds awesome! Maybe one day, I'll be able to go. I wouldn't know who to cosplay as though.

That would be Greed. I even cosplay him sometimes. Like yesterday, for example.
