I've noticed that too. And as the story goes on, Yusuke looks more like a martial artist (except the final episode), Kuwabara looks more professional, and Hiei...looks the same.
About the fabric thing, I think they said (or I read, dunno) somewhere that Yoko and his men (including Yomi) wore a special demon fabric that is made of strong material (basically doubles as armor). So that might be what there wearing. If I ever find out where I saw it, I'll let you know.
