I thought you already reviewed Black Lagoon, but yeah, let's go:
I have so many words to say about Black Lagoon, most of which have been shared by many an Anime YouTube Video-Essayist (I just made that word up, so it's real). I may put it on my own FoF list to give some of my thoughts.
To me, it starts off as an introduction to more Seinen adult-themed anime with the violence and adult content, especially considering the Western perception of cartoons/anime is that it's mainly marketed for children and teens since the shonen/shoujou genre is so popular.
But BL takes it a step further. At the base level it is cool to just go full throttle with the violence and swearing, but it actually touches on a lot of nuanced political and historical events that give greater context to characters that are slightly exaggerated and fantastical, but feel so gritty and real.
Plus, some of the arcs in the anime really push it to the limit and get into some pretty disturbing content that will make you question your humanity--you are right in that it is a completely different experience that no other anime comes close to replicating.
The manga is also still ongoing and apparently there's going to be a special chapter about Eda in the near future.
I just hope I get to live to see a Balalaika special chapter...*shudders*...I do love me some Balalaika.
