Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the anime and manga ARE based off a dating sim game (the game is only in Japan as far as I know). From what I heard of it, Hino was created in the anime and manga to fill in the part the player plays in the game.
Well, the second season is just 2 episodes, but I was rather disappointed by it. The new guy is a blond violist who comes off as rather a punk -.- he doesn't even attend the school if I remember right, either way, not much development behind his character. And yes, more female characters would be nice...I mean as far as all my orchestra experiences go, there may be a few guys in the violin sections, guys on the bass, but most of the instrumentalist are female! Granted the band has a bit more even ratio, but the anime was a complete reversal (how many guys do you know play flute?)
Oh yeah, K-On! was a fun anime (haven't seen all of it yet though) and they have some great songs there too. Although the plot is rather plot-less but it is enjoyable if you like the "slice of life" genre.
I know, the opening theme is just such a pretty song and that's so awesome that you had it played at your wedding :) Yeah, that's kind of what I thought. For some reason, it kind of reminded me of a dating sim... (Who shall Hino chose?! *shot*)
Oh, I haven't gotten a chance to see the second season yet. Do you recommend it at all? But I think I know who you're talking about. I've seen a few images with an extra person who I didn't know so that must be the new guy. I kind of wish if they did add another character that it would be female. I mean, yes, Hino is the main female character, but it is a bit shoujo-y and I think it needs to balance out somewhere.
Haha, it's fine. I think I might check them out anyway because it's always kind of fun finding small differences and seeing what was exactly quoted from the manga.
I know exactly what you mean! Whoever is doing the playing behind the scenes is amazing <3 I wish they would do more animes with instruments too :) The only kind of musical ones I can think of though are this, Beck, and K-ON (though I haven't seen it.).

I also loved this anime for the classical music aspect of it <3 I even had the opening song play at my wedding because the full song is so awesome. However watching it again with my husband I guess there seemed to be more focus on the shojo-relationship stuffs that killed the wonderful situation of the setting for us. (Not big into romance stuffs)
As a viola player, I thought it would be fun to dub Hino and have bloopers of making violin jokes and prefering to have a viola. I was looking forward to meeting the violist in the second 'season' but when I got to watch that, I wasn't too impressed with his character.
I have a few of the first mangas for this series, granted I read them when I got them over a year ago, but I think it was more shojo-y then the anime sorry I can't remember, They're kind of burried in our storage room right now...
Anyways, kudos for an anime that brings love to classical music and I admire whoever is playing the instruments for real behind the mic, especially when the musicians need to act and put on 'bad' performances for when the character falters. I'd love to see more animes with instruments ^^
