Enchanting Oceans

Chapter 1- Disobeying As Usual

~*Karina*~

“Daddy! I’m going out for a while.” I called out.

“Alright. You know the rules. No going-”

“To the surface or too close to the beach. Don’t talk to anyone outside of the village and don’t venture too close to Ruina City.” I rolled my eyes as I finished my father’s sentence.

“That’s right Karina. We are on the brink of war with them and it’s going to take a, delicate touch to keep the peace.” He said.

“Are you saying I’m not delicate?” I asked, flicking my tail slightly. Father laughed.

“You know what I mean. Go on and be back before it gets too dark.” He said. I nodded and swam away out of the castle and headed east. I planned on doing exactly what I was told not to, and why shouldn’t I? It wasn’t like I had a good reputation to uphold. A rebellious princess who was anything but delicate, at least that’s what they said about me throughout the kingdom. Sure I was a bit hardheaded and stubborn, but why was that such a bad thing? And anyway, I wasn’t all hard and stone like father, but no one ever bothered to try to see that. Everyone was too intimidated by Daddy to get too close.

“Ah, I’m getting close…” I said to myself as I saw the waters surface begin to dip down closer to me. I slowed down, my long blond hair fluttering with the light current and my scales shimmered in the brilliant sunlight. I looked around and began collecting seashells for a necklace. It was close to the beach where the prettiest shells would lie, so that’s where I went. I had been spotted before at this beach a few times. Once by a child, who was then quickly taken away from the water by his parents, and another time by an old lady who only did a double take and then shuffled slowly off as if nothing had happened.

Perhaps she just thought she had seen a dolphin. But as long as I wasn’t clearly seen or found out, I didn’t care if humans saw me. I went up to the surface and peeked up. The water was calm, and I saw the large rock that conveniently rested off shore a ways, the water was maybe 10 feet deep and the rock stood maybe 5 feet above the water. It was nice because I could hide behind it if I needed to. Up on the beautifully tall cliffs to the left stood a magnificent castle, its stone walls looked impenetrable and gorgeously royal. I wondered how humans lived, and had always longed to go and explore beyond the seas. But this world was beyond my reach. I sighed and dove back under, searching for seashells. A perfectly round purple and pink thing caught my eye. It was lovely, and I went back up and examined it further, and that’s when I heard voices.
