Chapter 5

Boxes were, well, everywhere. I was a little shocked that I found this. Previous owners must have left all this stuff here too. I opened up one of the boxes, and found some plates and silverware. Nothing too spectacular. Probably all of these boxes were full of junk. It would take a while to go through everything, and it was pretty dark to boot. Ughh, and it was getting cold up here too! Well, at least I didn’t mind the cold, but mom would probably not like it very much since she got cold easily. “Well, someday I’ll get through this junk. I’ll need a flashlight though.”
I heard a loud thunk and jumped at the sound of a box falling over. I let out a breath and went over to it and sat it up right. “Geez, lets not break anything now. There could be breakable stuff.” I said to myself and turned around and right into a cobweb. I turned into the worlds best ninja for a few seconds and tried to brush off my face. I didn’t feel anything on my hands though, but it was probably because the strands were so thin. I could have sworn I heard a chuckle but when I turned no one was there. I heard the front door open again so I bet it was the movers making fun of mom again. I couldn’t blame them. Just then I saw a shadow move out of the corner of my eye and I turned my head fast. Nothing was there and I sighed. The lighting in here was strange anyway. I was so jumpy today. Something brushed against my hand and I pulled my hand to my chest fast and looked down. A lace curtain was laying on a box and I picked it up. It was very beautiful, probably handmade and tinged with an aged yellow I think.
Something hit the tiny, dirty window near and I almost fell over. I quickly went over to it and looked around. I didn’t see anything but I did see a few birds flying around outside. “Damn birds.” I said. Was the would out to scare me today or what? I headed toward the ladder with the curtain and descended into the house once again. I wandered into the living room and showed mom what I found.
“An attic? I was never told about that. But that’s great! More storage space!” She smiled.
“Can I go through some stuff up there before we throw it away?” I asked. “I want to see what was left here.” I said.
“That’s find hun, take your time. I’m glad you found yourself a project already.” She said. I nodded a little. It would keep me busy over the next two weeks. I was really nervous about school and anything to distract me would be welcomed.
“I will. Do you need anything mom?” I asked.
“Not at the moment! But you look filthy dear, maybe you should take a shower? Things are partially set up in the bathroom upstairs, you could use that one.” She said.
“Ok, and I’m sorry about my attitude earlier.” I apologized quietly.
“Oh Vera…” She hugged me. “I know this was a big change. You’re handling it better than I thought.” She said and kissed my forehead. I nodded and headed up the stairs.
“Yeah, but you don’t know what goes on in my head…” I muttered. Walking into my room I noticed my diary open. I didn’t open it up, did I? I heard my door creek slightly and I looked over at my window, which was open slightly. I closed it, hoping it would keep the draft at bay. I found a towel and quickly pulled off my layers of shirts and tossed them on the floor near my bed. I still didn’t have a clothes hamper. My door suddenly opened up all the way and ran over to shut it totally before the movers saw me. I sighed and undressed completely and wrapped myself in a towel and headed to the bathroom to rid myself of grime and dirt.
